I've aimed at a job in IT since before starting school. While many see desktop support as a proving ground to leave ASAP, I enjoy using what I know well to take stressful, work-stopping problems out of people's ways and empower them with solutions to help them do what they do more effectively. The wide range of issues at a service desk are also a fun challenge that adds variety. I deal patiently with users because I could no more expect them to master my specialty than they could expect me to master theirs! I'm interested in moving on to server/network administration or programming desktop, mobile, or even PLC/automation systems if the opportunity arises - but I also see a lack of well experienced technicians in some places caused by the eagerness to move on, so that is a need I am happy to fulfill in the meantime.I take communication with clients seriously and in addition to minding the basics of spelling and grammar, I consider things like using appropriate grammatical voice to avoid putting clients in a defensive mindset. (Not "what did you do to your computer?" but "what changes may have happened on your computer?" for instance.) From my time studying programming, I found I love learning languages, so I study Japanese in my spare time, along with Korean, Cantonese and others that catch my interest. I am working toward formal certification at a high level (JLPT N3) for Japanese and can already translate modern Japanese to English with fairly high confidence.I've relied on experience to get by in doing tech support in the past, but that's not always easy to communicate to others. As time and money allow, I'd like to start collecting industry certifications (CompTIA, ITIL, Cisco, etc.) to verify and round out my knowledge and add to the on-paper value I can offer.Overall, IT has been my element from my earliest days. I want to excel not just for job performance or reputation, but for personal satisfaction.
