Western Maryland

For most of 2014 and half of 2015 I was a manager and historian for the Western Maryland Interpretive Association (WMIA). Finally I wrote grant applications and received grants for WMIA to further support the interpretive mission of the non-profit.At the end of June 2015 WMIA was taken over by the Eastern National and I was transferred into the position of Assistant Unit Manager for the Antietam and Monocacy sites. Warrenton, Va

As the site manager for the John S. Mosby Historic House Museum in Warrenton, VA I dealt with the day to day running of the Mosby Museum, including maintenance, tour group scheduling, as well as guiding guests through the exhibits and researching / designing new exhibits for the museum.I also worked with contractors for work on the museum and its bookstore. I oversaw merchandise ordering and helped to develop the museum interpretive materials.

Wrote extensive updates to the Civil War Sites Advisory Commissions report for Congress to advise them on the current condition of 383 battlefields involved in the conflict, and steps being taken to preserve them.Overhauled the original battle and campaign summaries for the 383 sites provided by the Commission to Congress in 1990 due to historical inaccuracies and misrepresentations in the original documents. These battle and campaign summaries have also been used by the National Park Service Civil War Sesquicentennial website to place individual conflicts in greater context.Reviewed data provided by field surveyors from the battlefield sites and provided accurate historical information to them, which included research of original and secondary sources from: the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, soldier’s personal correspondence and journals, the National Archives, in addition to other reference texts and private collections.Performed extensive research using historic battlefield maps and military terrain analysis to accurately determine historic locations in a modern topographical context using Global Positioning System technology and Esri’s ArcMap GIS mapping program. Taught both Western Civilization and American History courses at a 100 and 200 Level with an average class size of 35 students. Prepared and delivered text based lectures in addition to Power Point presentations, guest lectures and related in-class demonstrations. Developed course specific quizzes and exams to ensure students’ broader experience and understanding of history outside the narrow track laid out by the course text.

Prepared, planned and presented talks covering: orientation to the battlefield, use of artillery on the battlefield and the role of civilians during the battle of Antietam as well as an evening hike program titled “The Iron Brigade at Antietam.” Assisted with visitor research requests dealing with collection and analysis of data providing which military units were engaged at the battle and their locations throughout the fighting. Oversaw an average of 8 children between the ages of 7 and 16 per week throughout the summer. Taught outdoors skills as well as nature and conservation education for inner city youth.Acted as team leader, coordinating other volunteers and activities for assigned cabin.Trained to provide additional first aid assistance at the camp.
