In my current capacity, I lead the strategic and operational financial activity of MSI’s Forks Division and MSI-Defence Systems US. This includes managing all aspects of P&L and balance sheet control for MSI’s seven UK and international entities, and on behalf of MS International in the US, I oversee implementation of financial controls and standards in US, and establish and build US relationships with banks, auditors, and tax advisers. Developing structures and reporting systems enables me to assure transfer pricing compliance, and I also lead and direct implementation of IT and cyber-security strategy. I am pleased to have been able to play a pivotal role in establishing MSI Defence Systems US LLC. I did so by firstly conducting investment analysis as the basis for setting a target selling price to supply the next generation of weapon systems to the US Navy. This informed construction of a model that enabled profitability analysis and complied with requirements of US Federal Acquisition Regulations, Defense Federal Acquisition Regulations. The model’s commercial pricing basis secured order intake in second year of investment plan, 200% higher than planned, and Board approval to develop a manufacturing facility in the US.

I was pleased to have the opportunity to found and direct my own financial consultancy, providing specialist expertise to engineering and technology SMEs. Some of the projects that we delivered to clients included analysing product profitability to inform UK operations strategy, as well as developing financial planning and analysis processes to underpin consolidated Group forecasts and budgets. I supported a client to compile a business case that gained Board approval for establishing legal entities in China, and for another client I created consolidated reporting processes for new businesses, by rolling out IBM Cognos Controller as a Group consolidation package. Separately, I acted as Interim Finance Director supporting processes to dispose business entities from one Group into a new Joint Venture, and to lead functional restructuring. As part of this, I also established a business designing workwear for women (Hoydens Workwear Ltd). This encompassed developing a governance framework to ensure compliance with HMRC, VAT and Payroll reporting requirements, as well as shaping an IT strategy for marketing and selling platforms and building a supply chain for product, packaging and distribution logistics.

This role centred on directing the cultural and professional integration of two Divisions of the Omicron Group of companies and other OI companies, comprising three manufacturing centres in the UK and Germany, as well as sales offices in the USA, Japan, China, and France. A key component of this work was to harmonise planning and reporting arrangements across the whole OI Group, and I did so by overseeing implementation of an R&D prioritisation modelling tool. An important focus in this capacity was to reverse a divisional under-performance of a 10% operating loss, and return to break-even. This was achieved within 18 months by promoting an emphasis on strategic order book management, more so than solely sales management, and assessing data to generate an overview of product and customer profitability. In practical terms, I also translated strategic vision into a business improvement plan that identified scope for savings, plant restructuring and reduced overhead costs. This plan was underpinned with bespoke KPIs and a mechanism to monitor progress. Finally on a day-to-day basis, I oversaw all aspects of operational financial management, including full P&L/Balance Sheet control, statutory reporting in Germany, and liaison with auditors and banks.
