About Matt Buckman

I am an embedded software engineer developing C++ code on Linux. I have experience writing modern C++ code for image processing and data capture applications. I’ve written simulators and tests which are used to validate IR capture software used by the Missile Defense Agency. In support of those missions, I’ve used ethernet to read and write to IO on external data acquisition systems that monitor and maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) during a launch event. In other projects, I’ve produced TCP/UDP/Multicast networking applications in C#. I’ve used Python3 and TensorFlow to dehaze cloudy images using Neural Networks (using GANs). I’ve written CAN communication libraries to parse and send messages to devices (GPS, power, temperature, etc.) on wake boats, ATVs, and work vehicles.Though C++ is my primary language, I am also comfortable and skilled at implementing user experiences that ‘make sense.’ On the whole, I excel at integrating the various parts of a project into a single cohesive product.

I improve and maintain a custom Debian Linux-based OS for hospital video-call tablets, carts, & TV-kits. The work includes implementing custom C++17 services, Bash installers, Linux kernel upgrades, and GTest unit tests. In addition to my work on the OS, I have trained custom YOLOv8 machine vision models for tasks like distinguishing patients/staff/visitors, tracking eyes, and other use-cases. I’ve also spearheaded the multi-team adoption of new technologies, like machine vision, GitHub Copilot, and Dart. Accomplishments:- Trained and optimized machine learning models for NVIDIA hardware, AWS EC2 cloud instances, and Android/iOS mobile devices.- Increased audio manager speed by 98% in C++ with PulseAudio. - Hardened OS updater with safe partition mount utility, recovery from system errors, etc. - Upgraded custom Linux installer from BIOS to UEFI to support new hardware.- Added dynamic registration checks via JFrog Connect and AWS S3.

I upgraded legacy C++ and C# software which is used for IR capture and sensor management. This work included producing simulations, working with complex data formats, and ensuring changes were compatible with all existing features. I also maintained C# code used for querying a SQL database to collect metrics for our department.I have produced C++, CMake, and FlatBuffers architectures for image processing and communication. I created a TCP/UDP/Multicast networking software for Windows and RedHat Linux (via Mono) in C#. I am passionate about good team organization using Scrum and Jira. I've facilitated sprint retrospectives across 3 teams and have presented department training on FlatBuffers and Neural Networks. My documentation for secure coding practices has been adopted as an official department process.

I created software for touch-screen vehicle control interfaces using AngelScript (like C++) and Bash. This code controlled embedded electronics and physical systems such as GPS cruise, PTO, linear actuators, and pumps. To interface with external devices, I’ve implemented communication protocols including J1939, NMEA, and CANOpen.
