Worked with our estimating department on a variety of state, municipal, and private bids to create a sound and encompassing estimate. My days involved attending internal meetings, contacting potential clients who have requested quotes, making site visits, building an estimate with accurate time and cost, and assisting our estimators with any other task they needed completed. When my workload would slow down, I would visit our nearby sites where I was able to talk with our crews on why they performed an activity in a certain way. I could then take this information and implement a more accurate estimate based on that specific activity. I was also given the opportunity to run a small mill and resurface job for three days near the end of my internship.

Worked on the PUSH 3 project consisting of 120 lane miles of rehabilitated interstate crossing Northern Indiana. My primary duty included documenting all of the roadway cross slopes to ensure that we placed the road back at the proper slope to ensure safety and to meet the design specifications. My other responsibilities included preparing the weekly MOT configurations and calling in the specific lane closure requests to the owner, keeping up with various utility locates, laying out ahead of the mill and paver, periodically overseeing our crews and subcontractors, and working on anything else needed from me by the project team.

Worked under the estimators/ project managers on 10 upcoming bids. I performed a variety of tasks involving quantity takeoffs, job visits, sitting in on bid review meetings, and developing an average unit price for our INDOT projects. During this time, I used the Bluebeam, Excel, and bidTabs software.

Worked with one of the superintendents out of the South Bend office out on a 2 mile highway removal and reconstruction of the US 31 Bypass that surrounds the greater South Bend area. In my time with Rieth-Riley, I was able to see almost everything that is involved with pavement removal and reconstruction. I also worked with our concrete QA manager in making and breaking concrete traffic beams in order to open the road up to traffic.
