About Matt Erhart

I started my career doing cognitive research and coding in matlab and then Python. In 2016, I started building full-stack apps with Typescript, Reactjs, Nodejs, and (for ML) Python . Most of my experience is in academic R&D settings, but since I excel at understanding humans, the big picture of the business, and new technologies, I was promoted to Lead Full-Stack Developer after 1 year, and Sr. Director after 3.5 years working outside of academia. Though my title progression is most relevant to future job prospects, my favorite career accomplishment is when I used principles of human perception to redesign the alphabet with color. The alphabet is an absurdly fundamental piece of information technology, and I was able predict how changes in its design would improve parafovea letter recognition. I did fail at converting humanity to a color based alphabet, but working on such a crazy project was wonderful. Recruiters: I'm primarily looking to join companies with missions related to cognitive science, education, STEM, construction, and creativity. I'm looking to join teams with an experimental mindset that want to understand users and take projects from 0 to 1 and beyond. I enjoy my current job, but I could spend decades at a company with an amazing mission and mindset.

Matt Erhart Work Experience Details
  • Conductiv
    Senior Director Of Software Engineering
    Conductiv Mar 2020 - Present
    Walnut Creek, Ca, Us
Led a team of data scientists and full-stack engineers that blended R&D with internal tooling. Gathered perspectives throughout the company, identified opportunities for improvement, connected those opportunities with new technologies, architected systems, designed UIs, and incorporated weekly user feedback into our roadmap. Shipped tools that met user needs and advanced our engineering capabilities. Designed and built PoCs presented at budget meetings, which helped the company secure funding. Taught my team new front-end, AI, and vector search techniques through the development of working prototypes. Contributed to hiring decisions for engineers, analysts, and product managers. Mentored and promoted team members with a wide range of experience.
  • University Of Maryland At College Park
    Design Researcher And Fullstack Developer
University Of Maryland At College Park Feb 2018 - Apr 2020
Built tools for finding and understanding scientific papers with Typescript, React, and Firebase. Designed the UI, reviewed the scientific literature, analyzed the competition, and designed experiments. In another project, I studied the connection between optimization techniques, creativity, and the diversity of ideas/experiments, and then built prototypes in Python, React, and Typescript.
  • Mari
    Frontend Developer
    Mari Aug 2017 - Nov 2017
Updated and maintained code written in React, Redux, and Typescript for a web platform that does lifelong skills tracking, recommendations, and visualizations.
  • Ucsd
    Data Visualization Developer
    Ucsd Jul 2017 - Sep 2017
Part time contract position to visualize the propagation of neural signals in a worm's brain. Built with webgl, regl, and react.
  • Carnegie Mellon University
    Data Visualization Developer
Carnegie Mellon University Mar 2017 - Sep 2017
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
Remote contract position to build React/D3 visualizations of concept interactions from scientific papers for the Human Computer Interaction Institute at CMU. Also built a chrome extension that feeds screenshots and text clippings into a web-based text editor, which aimed to improve the collection, understanding, and presentation of information collected while browsing the internet.
  • Design Lab, Ucsd
    Staff Research Associate 3
Design Lab, Ucsd Aug 2016 - Sep 2016
Short term contract position to build an Angular 2 web app to study virtual teams doing creative tasks. Supervised and trained multiple computer science undergraduate and masters level interns. Did an extensive literature review on experimental methods in group and individual creativity, team diversity, and team performance. Designed the web app, experiment, and measures based on previous research and extensive user testing on Mechanical Turk.
  • Design Lab, Ucsd
    Graduate Researcher
Design Lab, Ucsd Jan 2016 - Sep 2016
Designed an adaptive EEG and eye tracking based text input method for people with severe motor impairments, and presented this work at the Pervasive Health conference. Designed and programmed a web app and experiment to study virtual teams doing creative tasks. Developed a browser based app to visualize spatio-temporal neural dynamics on multiple 3d brain surfaces.
  • Ucsd & Sdsu
Phd Student In Language And Communication Disorders
    Ucsd & Sdsu Aug 2014 - Aug 2016
I joined this PhD program to work with one of the world's top reading and eye-tracking researchers, Dr. Keith Rayner. In my first year, he left for medical reasons, I found I fit in best with human computer interaction (HCI) researchers, and I left the program in good standing (GPA: 3.76) to pursue a career in HCI.
  • Rayner Eyetracking Lab, Ucsd
    Graduate Researcher
Rayner Eyetracking Lab, Ucsd Aug 2014 - Aug 2015
Redesigned the alphabet with color to improve letter perception for dyslexic readers. Led every aspect of the research process, used a deep understanding of the science of reading and color to redesign an absurdly important learning tool (the alphabet), and successfully improved letter recognition by 20% by optimizing the letter-color assignments with behavioral data.
  • Multimodal Imaging Lab, Ucsd
    Staff Research Associate 2
Multimodal Imaging Lab, Ucsd Dec 2008 - Aug 2014
    La Jolla, Ca, Us
Designed and programmed tasks for experiments. Oversaw collection of large, spatio-temporal data-sets (fMRI, MEG, EEG). Organized, analyzed, and visualized human performance and neuroimaging data with Matlab, R, Python, and Linux. Presented results at conferences.
