I have always loved health sciences, which led me down the path of academic research in biochemistry. My Masters research at the CHEO Research Institute in Ottawa focused on using high-throughput siRNA screening to identify genes involved in a critical cellular pathway (mitochondrial dynamics). Through this work, I identified MTX2 as a novel regulator of mitochondrial fusion and set the stage for future work to uncover therapeutic targets for developmental and neurological disorders. While my work was never published, it was recently validated in a Nature paper by a separate group (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32917887/), which was pretty cool for me to see! I completed my MBA at the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto), graduating in the top 10% of my class. While at Rotman, I was a member of the Creative Destruction Lab program, where I worked with a pre-seed quantum machine learning company to help develop their strategy and business plan. These experiences helped me realize how much I enjoy entrepreneurship and creative problem solving, which led me to work at a newly launched strategy consulting firm and later at a digital health startup. Ultimately, I’ve always wanted to get back into the world of health sciences, and in January 2021 I took the leap, launching my own company, Holsana. Holsana was founded to make plant medicines accessible in North America. We believe that nature has a tremendous amount of untapped therapeutic potential, as evidenced by the fact that 1 in 3 FDA-approved drugs are derived from plant molecules. At the same time, Eastern medicine traditions have used plants as medicine for thousands of years, representing a wealth of existing knowledge. Typically used in combinations of 2-10+ plants, these plant medicines are safe and efficacious for a variety of conditions. At Holsana, we are focused on supporting healthy sleep. Sleep underpins nearly all aspects of our overall health, and with two-thirds of adults in North America not getting enough sleep, this is a huge need. We’ve extensively researched dozens of formulas from Chinese Herbal Medicine and selected only those that we know will help people sleep better. Holsana will be launching with our first three products in the Fall of 2021!
