The Young Leaders Program selects up-and-coming young professionals and scholars to participate in Pacific Forum policy dialogues and conferences, which are normally limited to seasoned experts. The program serves as a catalyst for training young professionals in international policy affairs at an early juncture in their careers, while also giving greater voice to the next generation’s viewpoints within the elite circles of policy specialists.

Pursuant to the goals and objectives of ICAS – to publish original research and encourage intellectual exchange between US and Chinese scholars on economic and security issues impacting the US-China relationship – responsibilities include:•Conceptualize and execute a new application of ArcGIS, an interactive geo-positioning system, to the Indo-Pacific and Arctic regions to facilitate real-time consideration of sensitive territorial, economic, legal, and international issues•Produce original research on economic and geopolitical competitive frictions between the U.S. and China• Lead editor for the ICAS Bulletin, a bimonthly newsletter that updates a global audience on the most critical news, scholarship, and commentary on emerging and prevailing issues surrounding the U.S.-China relationship• Collect, edit, publish, and disseminate above research to academics, the media, and key US maritime forces personnel • Featured in Newsweek, China-US Focus, and The World Podcast• Represent ICAS as a panelist or speaker at external events hosted by fellow think tanks or industry associations, such as with the Carter Center and General Assembly of ZheJiang Entrepreneurs• Represent ICAS as a guest lecturer at the U.S. Naval Academy and the George Washington University, as well as with U.S. Air Force officers• Formulate, manage, and execute ICAS events such as panel discussions, roundtables, interviews• Secure financing for and implementation of applied research on maritime issues, outlining policy and political positions for Indo-Pacific regional stakeholders and for the United States • Building and sustaining a China-focused professional network with the U.S. government, private sector and academia

-Authored a white paper and presentation, using ArcGIS to clean and georeference tabular data to create an easily understood map, to inform leadership of the economic and environmental impacts of chronic oil spills-Audited Oceana’s Climate and Energy Campaign website, correcting errors and updating numerous action items to be used as resources for education, social outreach, and marketing for the Campaign’s mission-Tracked federal, state, and local opposition to offshore oil and gas activity, allowing Oceana to provide statistics and talking points for members of Congress in FY 2019 Interior Appropriations Bill hearings-Provided co-sponsorship opportunities at Congress for Bills opposing oil and gas activities, educating and advocating to staff in over 50 Hill offices about the dangers of offshore drilling and seismic exploration-Acted as a point of contact and provided technical support, such as translations, to Oceana’s China expansion feasibility study for a potential future Oceana office to be located in China

-Represented CWA in Senate offices and EPA Office of Water meetings, advocating for offshore wind energy financing in Baltimore and protection of Clean Water Rule, acquiring the support of stakeholders -Published advocacy proposal, The Environmental Risks and Oversight of Enhanced Oil Recovery in the United States, and supplemental materials to improve protections of drinking water sources-Engaged in online database research and nearly 20 interviews with EPA regulators, industry experts, NGOs, and consultants, presenting findings in a panel discussion with approximately 40 attendees

-Educated Chinese and Western faculty and students on the health effects of air pollution in a research proposal and presentation, advising corrective actions that resulted in HNC overhauling its HVAC over summer 2016-Participated in the 2015 Green & Clean Forum, which included government officials, industry leaders, and the European Chamber of Commerce to integrate international perspectives in the indoor air quality analysis
