Third innovation play. Handed off the momentum created in previous role to a new generation to keep evolving. Switched my focus to the next wave of sustainability challenges: nature (AKA biodiversity loss) and water (scarcity), not least as new financial disclosure requirements emerge, such as TNFD. Engaging clients as they realize nature and water have.

Second innovation role, with a bold ambition to create a globally material business line around the twin client challenges of ‘corporate sustainability’ and ‘climate change’. Poured in all my learnings to date and got the whole firm engaged. Working directly with ERM’s executive team and a handpicked leadership group we blew past initial revenue targets.

North America And Europe, Middle East & Africa

Took on my first deliberate innovation role, charged with combining change management, digital and EHS capabilities to help clients change their operational performance (for example a chemical company that was spinning out a new business and needed to stand on its own two feet). Worked across North America and Europe, alongside great regional leads.

A career ‘zig’ when I was expecting to ‘zag’ turned into a great opportunity to learn about the operational rigors of driving sales on a monthly cycle. Reminded me of the rhythm of publishing magazines (when you always go to print!). Helped the business unit diversify its client base away from dependency on a small handful of industry sectors. Personally.

Americas

Moved to the US to help bring business transformation to ERM’s North American clients. Hired very different candidates (from industry, management consulting and MBAs). Started to learn about how to make change happen - both in the firm and the market. Delivered breakout, multi-million dollar programs of sustainable business transformation for big energy.

Europe, Middle East & Africa

Started looking for different skills in other consulting firms as I began to realize that technical depth alone wasn’t enough to solve client problems. Created breakthrough global safety transformation programs with mining clients. Teamed with management consultants to fundamentally change how energy clients saw ‘non-technical risk.’

Cut my teeth in sustainability reporting, management systems and assurance, working with clients in energy, mining, Chem/Pharma and food. Carried over executive focus from journalism into Board level work for major mining and energy clients. Started to travel the world!

United Kingdom

Learned early that ‘getting the story’ was the real skill - writing is only 5% of the game. Built connections from CEOs to the front line across the UK utility industries as they went through their first evolution after privatization. Worked in multiple publishing businesses, from idealistic independents to big commercial firms, and industry trade.
