About Matt Harrison

With over 25 years of experience in the development, application, and use of digital technologies in the geosciences, I am the Head of the UK Research & Innovation Environmental Data Service (UKRI EDS). I lead a consortium of six environmental science centres and five data centres that provide integrated curation, analytics, and access to environmental data for research and innovation purposes.I have a proven track record of leading digital transformation, digital strategy, and digital engagement in the geosciences, working with large commercial and research organisations and governments globally to address scientific challenges using data science and other digital techniques. I have been instrumental in building and maintaining sustainable networks of specialists to deliver world-leading solutions, such as the European Research Infrastructure EPOS and OneGeology, as well as developing international data standards, such as INSPIRE for natural hazards and risks. My mission is to harness the power of data and digital technologies to generate real business and scientific value, and to advance the knowledge and understanding of the Earth and its systems.
