In this role I spent 16 months as the Command and Control Training Officer at the Royal Navy’s Damage Control school. It is of vital importance that all Royal Naval Vessels can respond to a seaborne emergency or indeed malicious damage inflicted by an enemy; I was responsible for the training of key directors in the fields of emergency response command and control to meet this objective. This included ensuring that service personnel undertaking my courses understood emergency response activities must be safely and effectively co-ordinated in line with available resources and command priorities. To facilitate practical training, I managed two ship control room simulators (T23 Frigate and T45 Destroyer) which, combined with displaced comms nodes and a team of my training staff, were used to deliver complex damage control scenarios. In addition to the delivery of training, I acted as lead technical customer throughout a competitive tender process for the replacement of one of the simulators. Having supported the down selection process for this £1 Million project, I then worked closely with the chosen supplier to develop the project scope and deliverables as well as providing ongoing technical advice and supporting the project manager with detailed integration within a high tempo training programme.

Marine Engineer Officer - Hms Forth
    Royal Navy Jan 2019 - Sep 2020
    Portsmouth / Falkland Islands
HMS Forth was the first of five Batch 2 River Class Offshore Patrol Vessels purchased for the Royal Navy and commissioned in 2018. She weighs 2000 tonnes, is 90.5 meters long and propelled by diesel engines, twin shafts and a CPP system. Post initial sea trials, I joined and oversaw the platform’s transition from dry dock repairs through to active service as the Falkland Islands Patrol Vessel. With a small but highly efficient department of 14, I oversaw all engineering aspects of the Royal Navy’s ‘Safety and Readiness Checks’ assurance process and demonstration to the class authority, including preparations for ship’s staff moving on board, proceeding to sea and ultimately operational sea training. This process provided significant ‘learning from experience’ which was able to inform operating procedures for the class, identify material shortfalls and ratify the initial cycle of planned maintenance including technical documentation, inventory and tooling. These lessons identified influenced the onwards processes and decisions of the Batch 2 project across the Fleet. Additionally, the feedback produced several additional dockyard work packages required to ensure the vessel was prepared and safe to operate in the South Atlantic for the next five years. Prior to and upon arrival in the Falkland Islands, an integration package was developed to facilitate operations and establish maintenance support options in the remote region.
