Chief Scientific OfficerAquark Technologies May 2024 - Present -
Nato Cso Set Panel Member At LargeNato Science & Technology Organization (Cso) Sep 2021 - Apr 2024 -
Principal Quantum ScientistDstl Jun 2019 - Apr 2024Porton Down, England, United KingdomI run the dstl quantum laboratory and organise internal research and development, as well as training the next generation of quantum engineers. I'm a 'nuts and bolts' applied physicist designing and building a number of technologies including atomic clocks, Rydberg sensors, gravity gradiometers, NV centre devices and magnetometers. My focus is on engineering these systems for robust and reliable operation in demanding defence and security environments. -
Co InvestigatorQuantum Technology Hub For Sensors And Metrology Oct 2014 - Oct 2019
-
LecturerUniversity Of Southampton Jan 2011 - Jun 2019SouthamptonI ran the Integrated Atom Chip research group. Our aim was to bring cold atom technology to the masses by reducing SWAP+C and improving manufacturability. This involved adapting materials, techniques and tools from the micro fabrication industry to build miniature magneto optical traps. We explored methods to integrate vacuum pumps, optics, atom sources, vapour control, electrical and thermal feedthroughs, embedded viewports, passive uhv technology, functional thin films and novel atom traps. We also developed and built high vacuum bonding tools with integrated plasma cleaning, alignment, atom source activation. Our work was part of the sensors and timing quantum technology hub, in which I was a co-I. -
Royal Academy Of Engineering/Epsrc Research FellowUniversity Of Southampton Jan 2011 - Jan 2016 -
Research FellowUniversity Of Oxford Jan 2010 - Dec 2010Oxford, England, United KingdomIn the Atom Photon Connection research group led by Axel Kuhn. I worked on slow light in vapour (theory and experiments) , atomic single photon sources which could be shaped and quasi on-demand using cavity mediated vacuum-STIRAP, and arbitrarily shaped dipole trap fields using digital mirror devices. The overall aim was to couple and route photonic and atomic quantum states for quantum networks. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Southampton Aug 2008 - Dec 2009Southampton, England, United KingdomPDRA in the Qauntum Control Group led by Dr Tim Freegarde. I carried on work from my PhD building an atom interferometer. We were exploring novel cooling methods and composite pulse techniques to make cold atom sensors more robust to real world imperfections and environmental noise. I also produced ab-initio theory for sub Doppler spectroscopy that accurately predicts saturation spectra for multilevel atoms. Much of my time was designing and building laser servo and RF electronics and magneto optical traps.
