He advised on and investigated a wide range of technical accounting and auditing areas such as: revenue recognition, asset impairment, auditor malpractice and independence, consolidation accounting, and custody audits. He also performed and managed cash tracing investigations resulting from asset misappropriations by investment advisers, corporations, and individuals. In addition, he performed trading and phone record analysis related to insider trading and market manipulation investigations conducted by the Enforcement Division’s Market Abuse Unit. He has experience working with SEC trial counsel and criminal prosecutors during investigations and litigations in both the civil and criminal context, which includes extensive work with agents from the FBI’s Economic Crimes Unit. Matt presented summaries of his investigative work at trial through oral testimony and detailed written exhibits.Matt was a member of the Enforcement Division’s Cross Border Working Group. The Cross Border Working Group focused on financial accounting fraud, auditor malpractice, and market abuse involving Chinese reverse-merger companies. He was also a member of the Division’s Proactive Working Group (a predecessor to the newly announced Financial Reporting and Audit Task Force) with a focus on detecting fraudulent or improper financial reporting.
