About Matt Kepler
I'm a Ball State University graduate with a MS in Chemistry looking for a career as a chemist. I have interest in analytical and R&D lab positions, as well as lab management.I have a year and a half worth of experience working in electrochemistry lab group during my time as a graduate student at Ball State where I frequently used cyclic voltammetry, linear scan voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and bulk electrolysis as analytical and synthetic tools, and I became familiar with H1 NMR, IR, and GC-MS as qualitative tools during my research. After leaving school, I worked for a year at the orthopedic company Zimmer-Biomet as a laboratory technician, where I worked in a cleaning lab testing implants for oil and debris content and in a Vitamin E lab testing polymer implants for their Vitamin E content. Following my time at Zimmer, I moved to Tempe, Arizona, and worked for MGC Pure Chemicals America, a Mitsubishi company, as a laboratory technician testing hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide for concentration and purity at the ppt level for 16 months. During that time, I gained experience working in a cleanroom environment testing trace metals via ICP-MS at the ppt level, and also routinely used ion chromatography, auto and thermotitrators, and TOC analysis.I returned to Ball State University to obtain my Masters of Science in Chemistry. I have been researching under Dr. Sergiy Rosokha, studying anion-pi bonding with benzoquinones, and have presented poster exhibits of my research at both regional and the 2019 National ACS meeting. Currently, I have an article submitted for the Journal of the American Chemical Society titled "Anion-π complexes of halides with p-benzoquinones: structures, thermodynamics and criteria of charge transfer to electron transfer transition".

MPCA currently produces two high purity products, hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide, which are used in the semiconductor industry for cleaning and etching silicon wafers. I worked in the analytical and cleanroom laboratories, where I was responsible for quality control testing of our products to ensure their purity before shipment. Ion chromatography, TOC, titrations, ICP-MS, and Atomic Absorption are our main methods of testing. During my training, LIMS was introduced into the testing process, and I gained more experience working with the Sample Manager program.

Zimmer-Biomet is a world-renowned orthopaedic company most famous for the replacement knees it produces. My initial responsibility was to test prosthetic parts (knee, femur, tibia, and ankle implants mostly) for debris and residue content in both polar (H2O) and nonpolar solvent conditions (CCl4) by using cavitation in a sonic bath to remove excess material from the surface of the parts and then quantifying the amount of weight lost by the part or gained by the beaker after sonication. In this laboratory, I gained experience working with carbon tetrachloride, sonic baths, vacuum filtration, and proper weighing technique on an analytical balance.I also worked in the Vitamin E laboratory, where our crosslinked polyethlylene implants were tested for percent Vitamin E. I worked both with the plastic slabs and the raw poly powder that made them. The powder was tested using Accelerated Solvent Extraction followed by UV spectroscopy. The slabs were tested using a microtome and IR spectroscopy on the thinly sliced sample. Gained introductory experience working with LIMS.
