Matt spent two years on assignment helping to grow the Sydney Integrated Design and Planning team and deliver a series of major urban planning and design projects. This included: masterplanning redevelopment of the Waterloo Estate and associated Metro Quarter, one of Australia's largest and most complex urban renewal exercises; leading the planning, landscape and urban design team on the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link project; and undertaking research and policy advice for the Greater Sydney Commission and NSW Department of Planning & Environment on ways to further enhance city liveability, UrbanGrowth NSW on urban density and Committe for Sydney on town centre regeneration.

From Sept 2012 to July 2015 Matt led the Urban Planning Team within the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, the Qatar government body set up to oversee delivery of all venues and infrastructure required to host 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™. This formed a long term ARUP assignment within the Programme Management Consultancy consortium. The team was responsible for overall urban planning, urban design, landscape, lighting and wayfinding activities.

The principal project whilst with AWA was to manage the masterplanning of the Clapham Park Estate in London, encompassing 3,100 homes and a wide range of community facilities, as part of a major New Deal for Communities Partnership-funded urban renewal programme. In parallel, I managed the masterplanning of the Tabard Gardens Estate Renewal in Southwark, London, for the Peabody Trust. During this period I co-authored the research publication ‘The Benefits of Positive Integrated Urban Design’ for the UK Government's Department of Trade and Industry, which quantified the benefits of an integrated urban design process. I also contributed to sustainable masterplanning and low energy architecture research for NESTA, The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.

During the period, Llewelyn-Davies was considered one of the foremost planning and urban design firms in the UK. I worked on a wide portfolio of urban renewal and new development projects. My principal project whilst at TSK was the masterplanning and implementation of the ‘Nirwana Garden Resort’, Bintan, Indonesia, a major mixed-use resort. In addition, I prepared:- a masterplans for a tourism development related to the ‘Stone Forest’ attraction in Yunnan, China- a feasibility study for a 400 ha eco-tourism resort in Sulawesi, Indonesia- a Masterplan and feasibility studies for a new township in Vietnam, for a Japanese/Singaporean consortium- a Masterplan for a mixed hotel, retail and residential development in Pekanbaru, Sumatra, Indonesia

I was recruited in the UK to join the Singapore Government agency JTC Corporation to work on the planning and urban design of numerous specialist industrial and business parks within Singapore. Projects included Changi Aviation Business Park and the Payer Lebar semi-conductor wafer fabrication park. I was responsible for managing all planning activities undertaken in the east of Singapore, and was involved in employment-related planning and regeneration projects elsewhere. This included the preparation of masterplans; design guides; planning standards; and various development control, client and stakeholder interface activities.
