About Matt Lally

I am a Director of Arup, co-leading our City Planning and Regeneration team, based in London and operating throughout the UK and internationally. An experienced urban designer and planner, for more than 27 years I’ve worked on a wide-ranging portfolio of projects throughout the UK, Europe, Australasia, Asia and Africa. My role as UKIMEA Urban Regeneration Leader involves leading strategic spatial planning, masterplanning and urban design teams, often focused on planning for large-scale renewal or growth. Projects vary from sub-regional strategies and policy frameworks, through city, town and neighbourhood planning and regeneration, to individual site-based briefing, masterplanning planning, design and delivery. Experience encompasses major rail-related developments, mixed-tenure housing and mixed-use projects, urban regeneration and estate renewal, and international sports event planning. Prior to returning to London, I spent two years at Arup's Sydney office (2015-2017), helping to grow the team and deliver a series of major projects. Between 2012 and 2015 I was seconded to the Qatar Government's Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s PMO, where I led the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ urban planning and urban design team. Before joining Arup, I was a Director of urban design practice Matrix Partnership, jointly running the London office for 10 years and working on a wide range of projects that I’m tremendously proud of. Prior to that I worked in other UK consultancies and spent three years working in Singapore.I’ve been responsible for several best practice research and guidance projects in the UK and Australia, including the UK’s highly influential Urban Design Compendium. I am an appointed Design Council Built Environment Expert and previously worked as CABE Enabler on various projects including design code piloting, eco-town masterplanning and housing design research.
