Supported the LAC Motor Replacement Program as a radiation safety technician during the spring 17' outage at Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. Also returned for another outage in March 2019. I was a member of the moderator replacement project team providing RP support for the mechanics and other technicians.

At Ontario Power Generation is where I began my training to become a Radiation Protection Technician. After successfully completing the Yellow Badge program, I participated in 2 outages as an access controller and CCA attendant.Part of my duties were to maintain radiation control of the air lock and it's CCA; help decontaminate equipment and personnel; enter survey results into RHIS; and log personnel into and out of the reactor building. After completion of the 2 outages, I was able to obtain my Green Qualification for the radiation department making me a fully qualified Radiation Protection Technician.

**At the time, Intech International was the name of this company when I was hired, it is now owned by Babcock and Wilcox.**Intech International's job was to inspect boiler tubes for thinning or cracking using a method called Eddy Current Testing. After identifying the tubes inside the boiler that had issues, they would then either remove portions of the tubes, replace them or plug them using a cap and weld system. If these tubes are not dealt with, they integrity of the system could be compromised. As wear and tear occurs over time, the biproducts can cause damage to the system, causing devastating results such as a breach of containment, cross contamination between the heat exchanger and the moderator, hot particles, personnel uptakes etc. My duties as a platform technician: - Set up and tear down of Eddy Current Inspection equipment at specific boiler entrances - Be on call for trouble shooting entrees for eddy current equipment - Replace broken or low functioning eddy current probes - Assist colleagues on preparation prior to their entry into the reactor building. - Remove and replace specific tool heads for the tube plugging/removal phase. Qualifications: - I was able to obtain my Eddy Current Level 1 Certificate just prior to my exit from this company. Although I was unable to use it because my new job did not require it, I am still very proud of the accomplishment. I have a much better understanding of how Eddy Current testing works. I would have been able to operate the Eddy Current equipment, review and record data for each tube surveyed.

My second co-op placement was an even better experience than my first. It was the first time that I would be able to venture inside a nuclear reactor. Again, I was a part of the Inspection and Maintenance Department except I had a different role. My role was to inspect feeder tubes inside the reactor building. Feeder tubes serve a key role in the process of producing power because it is the main supply line for water to be introduced to the core of the reactor to help start the fission process. These tubes however go through a lot of wear and tear over time and need to be inspected. We use various methods of ultrasonic testing to check for thinning of the feeder tube walls around high impact areas; elbow bends, joints, welds etc. If a tube is found to be at risk of leaks, or is currently leaking it will be replaced.My tasks included:- set up and tear down of platform equipment. - take radiological surveys of each feeder being inspected prior to contact.- use various types of ultrasonic probes to scan the feeder tubes. - map out locations on tubes to be inspected.- make sure all safety measures are taken and followed as per procedure.

My first opportunity in the nuclear power industry came as a co-op while I was attending college. This was such a great experience because I can now look back on it and think of how this started my career in nuclear. My daily task was to learn. I tried to absorb as much information as I could possibly handle. I would do training programs that were not even part of our department. Besides that, I did have daily tasks that I would preform in and around our shop. I was working for the Inspection and Maintenance Department for the SLAR division (Spacer Location and Repositioning). This device is used to locate and reposition guarder springs that are used the separate the pressure tubes from the calandra tubes in the reactor building. During day to day operations of the reactor, these springs shift and could cause the 2 tubes to forge together and could have devastating results. Some of my tasks included: - Read and Revise Procedures for a more user friendly approach. - Preform calibration checks on the SLAR device, software, and power source outlets. - Assist department employees in their day to day tasks.
