Assoc Staff Performance And Scaling Test Engineer

Kanata, Ontario, Ca

My work on the Performance team required designing, executing and recording tests executed on the Mitel Unified Communications platform. I collaborated with team members to ensure test coverage across the platform. Interfacing with product development on reported defects and software limitations. I handled field escalations setting up, reproducing reported issues and working them to resolution. Having assisted in the lab design I provided tours to customers and new employees giving an overview of the performance team responsibilities. A common question by customers, can I take a picture of the cabling to show my team? One highlight of my work was as a QA representative for Engineering to work a problem at a customer site in Spain. Call flows failed when making add\moves and changes via the administration portal due to a software defect. Prior to the on-site work, the customer database was installed in the lab, scripts were created to add test configurations and calls were generated via a load box to test the setup. These tools were used at the customer site to add a test configuration on the live system and generate call load while making add\move and changes. The problem was reproduced, logs captured and relayed to developers in California, fixes were deployed and the problem resolved. ShoreTel was able to retain the company as a reference customer.

Aug 2014 - Apr 2020

Senior Performance And Scaling Test Engineer

Kanata, Ontario, Ca

The product testing used physical and virtual servers, software, hardware and third-party products utilizing multiple test tools from vendors and in-house. The testing focused on performance and scaling, quality, stress, reliability, capacity and negative cases. Designed tests to determine load and capacity metrics to be incorporated into Mitel online documents for installations and deployments. Stress and reliability tests were created to exercise the system at and above design limits to ensure the system handles maximum loads without degrading and recovers when overloaded. My main goal was ensuring customers would be ecstatic purchasing a Mitel system.Worked extensively with technical publications to review and provide input to Mitel documents, Administration, Planning and Installation, Conferencing and Instant Messaging and co-authored Best Practices for UC75 Deployment.Third-party products were connected to and tested against the Mitel systems. Test reports were generated and any issues on the products had bug reports created with the vendor or development.Mentored new team members on system operation, Mitel processes and procedures and to operate and design test cases with call load generators.

May 2006 - Aug 2014

Product Assurance Manager / Engineer

Moorgate, England, Gb

I was initially brought into the company for product quality assurance testing. I handled other responsibilities during my time there, management of the product assurance team, work with vendor products, support of the internal VoIP phone system and provided lab tours.Managed a small team of product assurance engineers, assisted in directing daily activities, mentoring junior team members, attended cross-functional meetings while and continuing product assurance duties.Sylantro was a great company to work at, it had a real teamwork atmosphere. We worked extremely hard but had fun doing it. To meet schedules, at times there were extremely long hour startup weeks. It was typical when upgrading the internal phone system to have a team of QA, developers, and managers involved in and testing to complete the project successfully. There was a common goal to succeed. Unfortunately, the company didn’t make it on its own but was purchased by a competitor.

Jun 2002 - Apr 2006

Product Assurance Engineer

Product assurance testing of a VoIP phone system software, hardware and third-party products. The focus of the testing was functionality, performance, scale, capacity and negative test cases by creating test tool scripts. Reviewed Sylantro guides for accuracy and provided input. Worked with development on functional specification review to enhance test coverage. Recreated customer setups in the lab when field issues were escalated.Worked with marketing and management when customer lab tours were required providing an overview of the technology and functions performed. Sylantro worked with vendors for functionality and additional capabilities to design a robust product. This work consisted of installing products for proof of concept, testing under load conditions and providing feedback to the vendor and engineering teams. The internal phone system was used to alpha test products before releasing to the field. The work required installation and upgrades to software and hardware products after hours. Feedback on the design was collected from users as well as problems encountered. Designed and organized test fests to put a feature or the system under load.

Mar 2000 - Jun 2002

Job duties included system-level testing of an NT based Voice messaging system that interfaced with Microsoft exchange. Responsibilities included review of design and functional specifications, writing and executing of test plans and test cases. Worked with development testing new functionality before formal QA acceptance. Opened bug reports and worked them through to resolution. Wrote automated scripts using load boxes based on a Visual Basic language. Ordered, installed and configured new lab equipment. Supported the test LAN consisting of approximately 25 PCs. Provided technical support to the release team responsible for the delivery of a turnkey voice-messaging product with Compaq Computer. Duties included interfacing with Lucent and the vendor, furnished configurations required for regulatory testing, developed manufacturing processes, testing of the system and support for future releases. Interfaced with cross-functional teams when off-site testing and installations were performed.

1996 - 2000 ~4 yrs

Product Support Engineer Iii

Provided third level support to the Octel Technical Support Center including an on-call rotation. This involved a thorough understanding of system functionality with software and hardware experience. Created patches to resolve immediate system problems. Gave feedback to development for incorporating patches and improving software reliability. Provided on-site support for difficult or sensitive customer escalations. Duplicated field problems in a lab environment. Reviewed and wrote technical documentation for the technical support group. Assisted in new product releases and training for support teams. One challenging project was a trial in Japan to connect a voicemail system to an Ericsson switch. The result of a successful trial would be a new distributor in Japan. The worked required communication between the distributer contact, the Ericcson switch programmer and myself. There was a language barrier to overcome, English, Japanese, and Swedish, but we were able to successfully work through it. Using proprietary tools I was able to determine that the switch was sending an incorrect format of commands the voicemail system needed to operate. The correct format was relayed to the Ericsson programmer and the integration of the two systems worked according to specifications. Additional validation tests were performed and succeeded. The project was under some pressure as a large team of management were present and monitoring the initial testing. The trial was successful and Octel signed a new distributor in Japan.
