Kia ora! For more than 10 years, I have been researching and working in the areas of:• the impacts of underwater noise on sensitive marine life;• passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals;• underwater sound source identification and localisation; • underwater sound propagation and impact modelling; • coding automated detectors for vessels, marine mammals and fish;• characterising marine soundscapes;• assisting local Councils determine noise levels and limits for underwater construction developments, including developing assessment criteria. Postdoctoral Research Fellow
My research is on the distribution of fish species in the western Canadian Arctic, with a particular focus on a keystone species, the Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) using passive acoustic monitoring. Using statistical and acoustic modelling we hope to predict the potential impacts of anthropogenic noise and environmental changes on fish distributions. This work will be the first to investigate the eco-acoustics of Canadian Arctic fish and will provide essential data relevant to indigenous food security and long-term acoustic datasets needed to inform effective management. Also working on noise modelling and soundscape investigations within the Salish Sea off Vancouver Island.

Leading field- and laboratory-based research on ocean soundscapes and marine mammals around China, including Hong Kong, NZ and UK using passive and active acoustic surveys. Also involved in researching the bioacoustic behaviours in Yangtze finless porpoises. I have a strong interest in using field-based data to improve theoretical mathematical models for noise propagation underwater in differing conditions for environmental impact assessments.
