Offshore Wind Cost EngineerNational Renewable Energy Laboratory Sep 2018 - Dec 2022Golden, Co, UsDr. Matt Shields is an Offshore Wind Cost Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. He leads the lab's work on offshore wind techno-economic analysis, which involves developing cost models, analyzing market and technology trends, and projecting future costs. He has conducted analysis on the cost impacts of turbine and plant upsizing, supply chain opportunities for the domestic offshore wind industry, floating wind marine logistics, and feasibility assessments for novel technological solutions. -

Graduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Florida Aug 2008 - Apr 2014Gainesville, Florida, UsMy PhD research has focused on the stability and control of low aspect ratio (LAR) wings at low Reynolds numbers; experimental wind tunnel techniques are used as no analytical models exist for this flow regime. I developed a dynamic positioning system for our wind tunnel which is capable of actuating test wings in four degrees of freedom; by measuring static and dynamic loads in a variety of freestream conditions, the stability characteristics of these wings can be determined. Tests of LAR wings at increasing sideslip angles demonstrated the development of roll stall, a significant roll moment created by the asymmetry of the tip vortices. Roll stall also serves to couple the lateral and longitudinal stability axes and helps to explain the susceptibility of Micro Aerial Vehicles to gust perturbations. -
Adjunct ProfessorSeattle University Jan 2014 - Mar 2014Seattle, Wa, UsInstructor for Engineering Problem Solving with Matlab (ECEGR 101-02); Winter Quarter 2014. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Colorado May 2007 - Aug 2008Denver, Colorado, UsUndergraduate assistant involved in the design and development of the first Micro Aerial Vehicle at the University of Colorado. The design process involved iteratively building and testing new vehicles as no available design tools exist for MAVs. My personal tasks included aerodynamic design, carbon fiber fabrication, aircraft assembly, flight testing, structural analysis, and avionics/propulsion system selection. Testing included glide tests, free rotation wind tunnel tests, and flight tests. We developed the first stable flight of a MAV at the University of Colorado (10-minute duration flight in moderately gusty conditions).
