Within a team of two other mechanical engineers, the project objective was to design, test, and build an adaptive floor hockey device for a young boy with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy, to allow him to play Special Olympics Floor Hockey using an adapted walker. This project was funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant acquired by Dr. Kevin Taylor, Chair of the Cal Poly Kinesiology Department. Our project sponsor was Michael Lara of Southern California Special Olympics. Due to the user-based nature of this project, the team went through four major design iterations before developing our final design. We used numerous tools throughout the idea development and prototype testing phase of the project, including: quality function deployment (QFD) using the House of Quality model to develop a clear set of engineering specifications, decision matrices to compare and rate different subsystem and component designs, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to determine potential failure sites and risks associated with those failures, Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R), in addition to a rigorous engineering analysis and testing procedure to verify design requirements. The purpose of this design iteration and evaluation process was to accurately satisfy all of the client's needs using concrete engineering specifications, while also constructing the best product possible given the time and budget constraints we faced. After 9 months of repeating the design, build, test, and iterate cycle, we completed our device three weeks ahead of schedule, more than 50% under budget, and with all of our engineering specifications met. Our client tested the device for two weeks before our final turnover date to ensure it met all of his needs, and he reported our device performed extremely well.

Responsibilities and Skills Acquired:Performed numerous duct and pipe takeoffs (linear feet and equipment) for all variations of HVAC, plumbing, and process pipe bids.Assisted in compiling job estimates for HVAC, plumbing, and process pipe bids. Projects ranged in scope from small commercial (under $100,000) to large industrial/commercial (upwards of $10 million). Became familiar with AutoCAD MEP for building geometry analysis, and clash detection. Became efficient in FastDUCT and FastPIPE software for use in takeoffs and estimates. Compiled equipment documentation from vendors for Operations and Maintenance Manuals and Submittals. Visited job sites for trade meetings, drawing reviews, and to effectively communicate engineering specifications/drawing revisions to the foreman. Communicated extensively with seismic consultants regarding seismic bracing requirements for a large HVAC system. Became familiar with sheet metal duct manufacture and material specifications in addition to plumbing and process pipe manufacturing processes.
