  • Ferret Machine
    Mechanical Engineer
    Ferret Machine Aug 2011 - Dec 2013
    San Leandro Ca
Designed process, programmed, and operated CNC mills and lathes to machine precision mechanical components.I took the job after moving to San Francisco, while finishing my thesis. I was learning so much about precision manufacturing, I decided to stick around until my wife finished law school, at which point we moved Sonoma.
  • Hydrometrics Water Resources Inc
    Hydrologist
Hydrometrics Water Resources Inc Sep 2011 - Sep 2012
    Oakland, Ca
Built numerical groundwater models at county (approx 607 sq mi), watershed, and site-specific scales. Models were used to estimate water availability, drawdown, seawater incursion and seepage, among others. These models used several types of data, including observation well levels, pumping rates, climate records, geologic cores, surface water flow, and GIS, among others. Models were executed using MODFLOW/Groundwater Vistas and Hydrus. I worked with the Hydrometrics team on individual projects while finishing school. Projects involved communicating with and collecting data from state and local agencies.
  • The University Of Arizona
    Graduate Research Assistant
The University Of Arizona Jun 2010 - Jul 2011
    Tucson, Arizona
Collected and analyzed hydrological data. Measured stream flow rates using velocity area method with Flo-Mate 2000 flowmeters and transect lines; also used weirs, flumes, gauging stations/stage measurement, slope-area method, and dilution (gulp and constant injection). Measurements were made using U.S.G.S./University standards under the supervision of industry experts and U.S.G.S. affiliate researchers. Measured stream losing/gaining flow by seepage meters. Constructed temporary met-towers containing precipitation gauges, radiation meters, thermocouples, wind velocity meters, data loggers, and relative humidity sensors.Constructed standalone data acquisition systems. Systems were deployed by combination of off-road vehicle and foot. The systems collected heat/temperature data using a FLIR SC6000 high-resolution thermal imager and other instruments.Built specialized equipment. Constructed 1 meter borehole permeameter. Machined components for laboratory experiment such as load cell platforms, Tempe cells, proof-of-concept apparatuses, gantry posting system, and components for 30-ton subsurface weighing lysimeters.Performed variety of groundwater data collection and analysis tasks. These include pumping tests, soil sampling, Ksat measurements by falling head and borehole/slug test permeameters. Also included were laboratory measurements of both saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity by falling head, and Tempe cell method to obtain van Genucthen parameters and soil-water retention curves. Generated aquifer gradient maps by wellhead data logging.Collected water samples.Estimated evapotranspiration using 3 foot potential-evaporation pans.Assisted in a variety of research projects, including vadose zone evaporation study.Worked in small and large teams, and individually.
  • The University Of Arizona
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
The University Of Arizona Aug 2009 - Aug 2010
    Tucson, Arizona
Graded research assignments and provided feedback regarding writing and content for 60 student college sophomore level courses. Courses focused on water in the West, and included teaching basic scientific principles, as well as U.S. water policy and law west of the 100th meridian. Assisted in laboratory sessions.
  • Interface Engineering
    Mechanical Designer
    Interface Engineering Jan 2008 - Feb 2009
    Portland Oregon
Designed facility mechanical systems. Modeled building energy use. Projects were typically hospitals or campuses with a mechanical budget of $100k to $2M, and lasted 4 weeks to 2 years.
  • Novan Solar
    Mechnical Engineer
    Novan Solar Jan 2007 - Jan 2008
    Golden Colorado
Designed low temperature solar thermal systems and system components, including a 180 degree F, 24-hr heat storage system for domestic hot water. The storage system consists of a bladder, rectangular-footprint structural steel frame containing the bladder, and insulation. Water was used as the heat storage medium with input/output submerged-coil heat exchangers. Oversaw installation and manufacture of the solar thermal heat storage systems which ranged in size from 80 to 5,000 gallons/34 kBtu to 4.2 MBtu. Modeled solar thermal energy production for integration into facility mechanical systems.Worked closely with sales team to develop product market fit.
