My research experience of 5 years focused on bringing technological projects from inception to fruition and publication. I have written in C a 3D full-wave finite difference time domain code (EMIT-3D) parallelised in 3D. A numerical full-wave code is necessary when the in homogeneity scale length of the medium is comparable to the wavelength, in this regime the assumptions used in an analytical treatment are invalid. This is the case in the edge region of a magnetically confined fusion plasma through which microwaves must travel. Microwaves are incredibly important in magnetic confinement fusion as they are used to provide a wealth of information through active and passive diagnostics and are used extensively for stability control by driving a toroidal current. Moreover, they are the most common method for heating to thermonuclear temperatures. I spent three months living in Pairs working at Le Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas, Ecole Polytechnique, in the field of experimental low temperature plasma physics on a new form of plasma thruster for satellite propulsion. Resulted in 1 first author paper.
