The counselor at Ferris High School placed me--a freshman, new to the district--into the Junior/Senior Geometry class by mistake. As a hard-working student eager to make friends at my new school, I would blow through my work quickly and offer coaching to the towering basketball players and other upper-classmen taking Geometry for the fifth semester in a row.That was the first time I felt the thrill of helping someone learn.Ten years later, I again had a class full of struggling learners without much interest in the content. We discussed, we wrestled, we tried new activities, and we worked on our times-tables. Each time their eyebrows popped and their mouths widened in the ever-knowing "Ohhhhh!", I smiled.I still love that.These days—as a coach or consultant—it's the teachers who get me to smile when they learn how to make their class faster, easier, or more interesting with the use of technology and fresh pedagogy. I still love to see their faces light up as they say, "I am so doing this on Monday."
