I particularly appreciated the way Matt was able to cut through the high levels of complexity and keep teams on key topics for decision making during negotiations. He also has a very calming demeanor when things get tough. What I saw in Matt during this period was someone who not only excels in the commercial disciplines around procurement but also someone who has a very sharp, strategic and innovative mind when it comes to technology topics - he is a quick learner.   Based on this, when I took on my next role at Qantas, I asked Matt to join my team to head up a new group wide technology innovation team.  In this role, Matt demonstrated his ability to build (from the ground up) a strong team that combined leading technologists with business understanding as well as developing strong innovation partnerships with external technology providers.  The long list of business focused innovations (e.g. using deep learning to optimise aircraft turnaround, AR/MR through Hololens to diagnose impact of lightning strikes on A380s) the team created and then brought to life within the Qantas business speaks to the tremendous success of the team Matt created.   I have since left Australia and moved to France to take on a new role and would happily find a place for Matt in my European team should he ever decide to return to the northern hemisphere.  In the meantime I wish him every success in his future roles."
