Matt Helms Work Experience Details
  • Apple
    Software Architect
    Apple Oct 2020 - Present
    Cupertino, California, Us
Currently leading a data engineering team responsible for Camera and Depth hardware manufacturing data. My team is builds and maintains a distributed, event-driven, micro-service application stack which consumes data from Apple's global manufacturing supply chain. We ingest information generated during the assembly, testing, and calibration of camera modules and their parent systems (iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc.). Parametric data is ETL'd into a family of NoSQL databases. Raw data (images, sensor readings, process logs) are retained in S3 for offline analysis. All data is made available to x-functional engineering teams through a series of internally developed REST APIs, client libraries, and web applications.
  • Apple
    Software Prototyping Engineer
    Apple Feb 2016 - Dec 2022
    Cupertino, California, Us
    * Built the dynamic factory test and calibration framework which validates every Lidar Scanner built into iPhone and iPad* Build prototypes for novel 3D sensing methodologies. Some are currently in shipping products, others are still a secret ;)
  • Lytro Inc.
    Software Engineer, Optical Systems Validation
    Lytro Inc. Jan 2014 - Jan 2016
    Mountain View, California, Us
Optical systems calibration and validation for current and future light-field (plenoptic) imaging products:* Led manufacturing test efforts for the light-field image sensor subcomponent, including algorithm development, supplier bring-up, failure analysis, and cycle-time reduction* Supported NPI/Engineering builds and ongoing production at Asia-based component manufacturers through new test development, software and hardware debugging, and process optimization* Defined architecture and led refactoring of hardware interface platform used both internally and on production line that enables modular use of different hardware subcomponents* Designed and implemented a suite of web-based data visualization tools. Developed Python based database backend to collect and parse production test results data and a JavaScript-based presentation layer which highlighted key manufacturing metrics such as yield and throughput* Wrote hardware control software for a data acquisition system used to measure and calibrate the actuation of camera’s mechanical shutter
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
    Software Engineer, Embedded Controls
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Oct 2011 - Jan 2014
    Livermore, Ca, Us
As part of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), I design and develop embedded control system software for the second largest control system in the world. Specifically, I develop mission-critical camera control and video streaming software for the nearly 400 scientific and industrial cameras that are used throughout NIF for laser and target alignment. Additional responsibilities include systems integration and hardware/software debugging for the Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) diagnostics lab. This work enables single-point control and monitoring of over 40 laser alignment and diagnostic devices including scientific cameras, precision motors, power supplies, and oscilloscopes.
  • Mathworks, Inc
Software Engineer In Test, Embedded Signal Processing
    Mathworks, Inc Jun 2005 - Sep 2011
    Natick, Ma, Us
Led quality initiative for 8 full release cycles through creation of automated test suites and testing tools for the MATLAB Fixed-Point Toolbox and DSP System Toolbox. Served as quality consultant across many other product lines in the area of fixed-point algorithm development: * Fully tested the implementation of a family of CORDIC-based fixed-point trigonometric approximation functions (sin, cos, atan2, etc.). * Validated quality of automatically generated fixed-point C and HDL code for embedded DSP and FPGA targets using MathWorks tool chains: MATLAB Coder, Fixed-point Toolbox, Simulink HDL Coder, and Real-Time Workshop. * Created framework for automating installation and testing of company-wide software product line. This framework detected several critical bugs early in the development cycle that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. . * Developed and documented advanced testing infrastructure and gave regular presentations to other developers and managers showcasing new testing technologies and methodologies
  • Medical Scientific
    Engineering Intern
    Medical Scientific Mar 2004 - Jun 2005
    * Tested and debugged electronic subassemblies which were part of an RF power generator used for cauterization in endoscopic surgery. * Assisted in design and testing of new technologies being implemented on the next generation of RF electrosurgical generators. Such technologies include a high efficiency, high power switching step down converter, isolated patient impedance monitor, and a current sensing dummy load box.
