Despite being born in a landlocked suburb of Melbourne, Matt developed an early interest in sailing ships, engineering and coral reefs. Rumour has it that salt water flows in Matt’s veins…At 18 he left home, headed for a life at sea. Matt spent 6 years in the Merchant Navy as a Marine Engineer and then came ashore to study Naval Architecture. But the call of the ocean was strong and it wasn’t long before he was back at sea, this time in the offshore game as an installation engineer. Known for having a shifter and a ruler in his pockets, he worked his way from Australia, into Asia, then Europe and the Gulf of Mexico.In 2011 he founded Subcon and merged his childhood passions for reefs and engineering into his dream job. Subcon pioneered engineered reef solutions for coastal erosion, decommissioning, tourism and fisheries decline. Fusing art, science and marine engineering the Subcon team worked with nature to deliver some iconic projects and make a difference.In 2022 MMA Offshore acquired Subcon. MMA are a specialist marine contractor providing subsea construction solutions for offshore wind, oil and gas, coastal and defence. Matt is now a BDM at MMA and proud part owner of a fleet of light construction vessels, complemented by integrated services including hydrographic survey, stabilisation and ROV.
