About Matthew Altemus
When I started college, I was a finance major. I thought I'd have a career in corporate finance, or maybe I'd switch majors later on to become an accountant. I loved numbers, but my first finance class, Finance 301, made me realize I made a horrible mistake. I changed majors a few more times but finally landed in marketing. Today, I'm in a career that merges my background, knowledge, and experience in marketing with the critical link needed with finance. It links with other business functions like procurement/sourcing, too.I have unwavering respect for my finance, procurement/sourcing, purchasing, accounts payable, and other business function colleagues. They are part of a "behind the scenes" system that keeps a business running. They don't always speak the same language as a marketer, though. And vice versa.Marketing is just as concerned with, to name a few things, costs, budgets, invoicing, purchase orders, accruals, and determining what's actual spend vs. committed spend vs. forecasted spend. These things, after all, support the campaigns a marketer runs and overall marketing goals. Here's where I come into the marketing ecosystem. Yes, I've had roles in graphic design, been one of those marketers running campaigns, been a team leader wondering how much budget I have left to spend, and have held a few roles focused on event marketing. Today, though, I use my knowledge and background in marketing to minimize dysfunction between marketing, finance, and procurement processes. I've become fluent in the language of finance and procurement so that other marketers don't have to. I free up marketers' time so that they can focus on their campaigns and lead generation activities. I also help marketing leaders understand their marketing spend and, hopefully, help them make better-informed purchasing decisions that support corporate goals. So maybe that Finance 301 course came in handy after all.
