Critics said "college faculty evaluations will never be done on the Web", so I left Academia to join skilled and like-minded colleagues to prepare the foundation for a new industry in Higher Education. The four co-founders of IOTA Solutions (Scott Jablonski, Stephen Konya, Keith Hmieleski and I), created the first web-based institute-wide course evaluation system (MyClassEvaluation). The widespread success of MyClassEvaluation across many industries was due to Chief Architect Jeff O'Donnell. 14 years later, IOTA's evaluation methodology is now used by more than two dozen online course evaluation companies, and "college faculty evaluations on the Web" are used in 85% of U.S. colleges.

Examined all existing research and applied the framework of Embedded Assessment to distance learning programs, particularly in the U.S. military. With financial support from the National Science Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, I opened the first U.S. laboratory dedicated to the assessment of web-based learning in higher education. My team of 18 graduate students collected some of the earliest evaluation data from community colleges, universities, and corporate learning organizations using the World Wide Web to deliver synchronous and asynchronous learning. The IDEA Lab was skillfully managed by Stephen Konya, M.S. & Keith Hmieleski, Ph.D.
