Graduate Trainee, The Business Leadership Program (Blp)Barclays 2002 - 2003London, England, United KingdomMy first job out of college was a graduate trainee program at Barclays. My favorite part of the job was being called a "naive, Guardian-reading lefty" by a colleague who thought my focus on delivering a diversity report for the risk management division in business banking was a waste of time. It probably was, to be fair, because most of the people I interviewed were close to retirement. But I'm still glad the organization saw the benefit of paying somebody energetic to get stuck in on some of its more intractable issues. Particularly since the bank had been tied to apartheid in South Africa until the 1970s. I worked alongside more than 100 other people in a similar position, and we went through extensive management training including two weeks of team building exercises and a trip to the Lake District. My role included three months in the branch network, and three months in the talent management function. Ultimately I moved on because I realized I wanted a more creative career--and to get more in touch with my own "talents"--but I enjoyed meeting so many bright and capable people, and it was a catalytic start to my working life. It was also the opposite of what most people with an English degree from Sussex chose to do after graduating, and in that sense, was very refreshing and positive to have done! I appreciate that Barclays was in a position to take a chance on someone with my outlook, and am still grateful for the experience. -
Barista And TrainerStarbucks 1997 - 2002London, England, United KingdomInitially I worked for a firm called Seattle Coffee Company, which Starbucks bought. I started as a barista then got a job in the training department, training more than 20 baristas a week in the basement of our shop at 137 Victoria Street in Central London. They were drawn from all over the world and we covered everything from coffee tasting to handling cash to making the actual drinks. I really enjoyed being a #barista and thinking about the skills that made people successful. I carried on working for Starbucks as a student in Brighton at the store on Western Road and ultimately my work in the Learning and Development department is what convinced Barclays to take me on as a graduate trainee with an interest in HR and management.
