I love to build things - taking a collection of separate parts, ideas, or people and combining them together to create something new and better is what gets my neurons firing. I've chosen Software Engineering as my discipline because few other professions can invent, iterate, test, and present their work with quite the speed, flexibility, and reach as I can with software.My brain works using concepts rather than facts - I can’t remember your birthday but I can recall an article I read years ago about survivorship bias, good peer feedback, or how indexes work. I thrive when learning new approaches to problems and quickly integrate them into my thinking. I see this as my biggest strength and apply it daily.During my career I've had the opportunity to work on and lead projects, teams, and held responsibilities across a wide variety of domains:- Architect and lead developer of Smart Core, an open source OS for buildings. Providing data visibility, automation, fault reporting, and security. Working with on-premise, multi-node computing using unreliable networks (and sometimes unreliable power).- Architect and developer of Kahu, an international SaaS workplace management suite. Creating the POC used to land the first client, designing and building out the suite ready for global use, and transitioning the product from start-up to long term development.- Bespoke client projects from immersive sensory spaces to smart hotels for athletes. Using mixes of open and proprietary tech, integrating with dozens of systems, each a different size. Taking each project from conception through to support.- R&D projects: eVTOL charging for buildings. Automatic keywording via face detection and recognition. NLP of media captions and articles. Search ranking and performance.- Internal projects: A holiday reporting bot. SQL DB migration. CI/CD pipelines. Code style and best practices. Team dynamics and process improvement.With these projects I’ve learned many tech stacks, trends, and skills. I’ve worked on front and back ends, database and cloud projects, maintained legacy systems and built new projects from scratch. I currently use Go and Vue.I'm happiest when working with a focused team of peers, people to bounce ideas off of, who can give feedback and work together to make something better than any of us could make on our own. The best possible outcome is when others spot mistakes in my thinking or come up with ideas I never thought of. I’m proudest when my work improves the day-to-day lives of others by either removing an annoyance or bringing delight.
