Solutions Engineer, Innovations/It

Nottingham, United Kingdom

At the end of March 2012 the role of Solutions Engineer at our Nottingham studio became available. This role was advertised internally to all members of staff. I applied for this position along with a number of other candidates and after a number of interviews with the groups business director I was successful in my application. I moved into the Innovations and IT team in May 2012.I was also still involved in production of digital artwork, repro, image separation and retouching in order to support our studio during particularly busy periods. I also retained the role of print production manager continuing to attend several press passes at large European printers such as Smurfit Kappa and Eurostampa. Keeping myself in touch with these areas of work allowed me to have a hands on approach to production which in turn gave me a better insight into working practices across the whole supply chain from design to print. This made it easier for me to advise possible improvements internally and externally in my job as a Solutions Engineer.Specialties: Design, Artwork, Repro, Retouching.Illustrator, Photoshop, Artpro, Automation Engine 10 (Backstage), Customer Relations, Project Supervision.

May 2012 - Jul 2016

Senior (Lead) Mac Operator/Print Production Manager (Ppm)

In 2007 Tecnolink was acquired by Imagelinx. During this time Imagelinx required an operator to work on various Procter & Gamble accounts. I was asked to transfer from Milton Keynes to the Nottingham studio. After a few months at Nottingham using my knowledge of Artpro, Illustrator and Photoshop to full effect on the Clairol account I decided to apply for one of the Lead operator roles that was being advertised internally. My application and subsequent interview was successful. I then became the figurehead for production on P&G 's Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant division, Clairol and Gillette promotions. This role meant I had to oversee the work of fellow operators as well as liaising with account managers and the client. It has allowed me to take on more of a customer service style role on occasion, as well as attending press passes in Poland and Germany. I was also required to work out in our US office in Boston for 6 weeks during 2008 to help out on production for Gillette blades & razors. This was an excellent experience. I have more recently been heavily involved in Wella hair care on both production and in a print production manager capacity. Using my wealth of design & print knowledge I have been able to deal with printers in the UK and abroad in order to achieve excellent finished results on press. In my time at Imagelinx to have worked on a wide variety of large accounts. These have included Hills pet foods, Diageo, Grants Whisky, Febreze & Novartis pharmaceuticals. Although my job title was officially Lead Operator I have been fortunate enough to evolve into more of a Design to Print Manager. I have also been involved in client relations working on projects for large blue chip companies. This usually involves successfully taking design ideas from concept and through to a final print solution, whereby finding the best compromise between the initial design intent and what can actually be achieved on a print press is key to customer satisfaction.

Studio Manager/Mac Operator

Tecnolink/Tecnolabel

Leicester/Milton Keynes

Having been approached by TecnoLabel & TecnoLink’s Managing Directors, I took up this position initially to set up and run the TecnoLabel pre-press studio. As Studio Manager my role included customer service as well as the design, artwork and repro for the labels and cartons that were to be run on TecnoLabels Presses. It was a very rewarding position and very hands on. The pressures were very high to ensure that work was constantly fed through to the Litho and Screen presses on time and more importantly correctly. Unfortunately just as I was beginning to expand the studio by employing further operators TecnoLabel went into receivership and subsequently ceased trading in June 2006.I then located to Ashby, one of TecnoLink’s satellite sites, managing the same accounts as at TecnoLabel but feeding the work to different printers. I began work at the Milton Keynes Studio in September. During my time in the Milton Keynes studio I worked on various accounts such as Carlsberg, Rexam, Guinness and Kerry Foods. I commuted to the studio from Derby on a daily basis during this time and it was good experience.

Mac Operator

Nottingham, United Kingdom

I joined ImageLinx mid 2004 as mac operator working on the Colgate/Palmolive account. The work was very in depth and required a great deal of repro in Adobe Illustrator and retouching in Photoshop. The year I spent at ImageLinx was a very busy one and our team worked many extra hours in order to get the new account off to a flying start. This move to ImageLinx gave me valuable experience of working in a different studio and allowed me to brush up my skills in Photoshop & Illustrator as well as using Nexus workflow and different output devices. I enjoyed my time at ImageLinx and made many friends. Although I was asked not to leave, and I was reluctant to go, I moved back to TecnoLink to take on the more challenging role of setting up my own studio in TecnoLabel in July 2005.

Jun 2004 - Jul 2005

Studio Trainee/Mac Operator

Tecnograv

I joined TecnoGrav in June 1999 whilst still sitting my A-Level exams. I began here as a Studio Trainee and set about to learn as much as I could and take on as much responsibility as I could in my 5 years. I believe it was probably the best way to start my career in reprographics and learnt many new skills. I started by shadowing different mac operators whilst also producing analogue cromalins and servicing the film processor. I then moved into the Flexo department and learnt how to make plates and eventually became the sole operator of the Misomex Flexo CTP machine. I worked this machine for about a year until it moved down to Paragon Labels in Spalding. At the time of this move I was required to spend a week at Paragon and train up 2 of their operators in the use and maintenance of the Misomex. I was also their point of contact for the following 6 months to help if they had any issues. My next step was to join the main studio as a full time operator and Digital Cromalin operator. I attended 2 courses in Redditch for Barco and Artpro and continued to shadow operators at TecnoGrav and pick up any knowledge from them that I could. Eventually I took on my own accounts, which involved the Origination, Artwork and Repro for our drinks labels printers TecnoLabel, Diageo, Grants Whisky, Tesco, McVities and Decorative Sleeves. TecnoGrav went into receivership in 2004 and I was transferred into TecnoLink . During this uncertain time I was approached by ImageLinx to go and work for them and so left TecnoGrav/Link in June of 2004.

Line Operative

Belper

I started working at the Thornton’s factory in Belper as a line operative in November 1997. This was a part time role and I worked during the evenings in order to earn some money whilst I was studying for my A-Levels. Although the work could be very hard and monotonous we still had fun and I met many different people from all walks of life. I found the job to be very character building; it increased my confidence in meeting new people and gave me an insight into the workings of a large factory & company.
