I led all surface mine operations, mine maintenance, and mine engineering for the large 150,000 to 200,000 tons per day truck/shovel operations at Twin Creeks & Cripple Creek and Victor. I managed budgets in excess of $100M, with 3 to 24 direct reports, and teams of 300+ salaried and hourly members. We made considerable progress moving those operations from good to exceptional. We achieved world-class safety performance evidenced by the 2015 Nevada Mining Association safety award for large open pit mines and a similar award in 2017 from the Colorado Mining Association. Through continuous improvement we reduced operating cost some $30M over a few years and were able to improve FCF at one mine by $200M over two years. Setting high expectations allowed us to set productivity improvements of 3% year over year and achieve them, contributing to overall cost reduction and improved FCF. Employees played a central role in moving from good to exceptional and we developed a formal line of progression for the hourly employees to be able to achieve their personal goals. This improved moral and reduced turnover from 25% annually to 10% annually. Show less -

I was a Senior Project Manager specifically searched out and brought in to manage the $75M Milltown Dam removal project located at the confluence of the Blackfoot (“A River Runs Through It”) River and the Clarkfork River upstream of Missoula, MT. How I ended up with that great job, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, is a long story but it was an evolution of my expertise in mining, environmental remediation, and leading business and people from good to exemplary, among other things. The $75M budget was set well before a design of how to remove the dam was finalized and all the stakeholder input incorporated. The final budget could have easily ballooned above the $75M and threatened to delay or cancel the project. The public, the regulatory personnel, and the politicians were all interested in the project and had a say in how it was to proceed and when. We achieved exemplary results dealing with those stakeholders and being able to satisfy their concerns and desires while negotiating the project with the primary decision-makers and holding the budget at $75M. It required a team of approximately 50 different people and numerous disciplines to design and implement the project. That was no easy task. We could not just pull the plug on the dam, so to speak, to drain the water as there were contaminated sediments behind the dam. We could not allow those sediments to wash downstream like dirt in a bathtub heading down the drain. We removed the impacted sediments behind the dam first and then were able to pull the plug. So little impacted sediment washed downstream that we did not exceed the water quality standards downstream of the dam. The commercial terms for the project were that if we could do the project for less than $75M the company would be paid 100% of the savings. We were able to make the project exceptional by coming in under budget with an exemplary safety and environmental record. Show less -

I managed the permitting and regulatory compliance of over 40 ready mix concrete, cement, and aggregate mining facilities. We identified and implemented the necessary changes to operations to achieve environmental compliance with all regulations and improve environmental performance of all facilities. To move from good to exemplary, we first used mentoring, training, and coaching of my junior colleagues to ensure results-oriented environmental support for all facilities and implemented change of culture of the operations by constructively influencing others toward environmental stewardship priority. Second, we drove timely adoption of mine technology and innovation allowing us to develop and implement operational and capital improvement to facilities reducing environmental impact and improving compliance with regulatory expectations.
