As Enovation took on larger and larger custom OEM projects over the past few years, it became impossible to dedicate the necessary Engineering resources to our core platforms and general-marker products. Eventually, we formally split off a segment of the Embedded Software Engineering group and spun them up as a new team in the Custom Software Solutions group. I am managing this new team of experienced Engineers in a different department with increased customer interaction. It's something of a "fresh start" to establish new processes and norms to help the group succeed. Meanwhile, I'm still managing the workload of the general market projects until their new structure and processes are in place, and allow me to hand them off.

This position was largely intended to formally empower the work that I was attempting to do in the Product Owner role, which was more of a management role in practice. I maintained the previous responsibilities while taking on direct supervision of four employees. I also began serving as an informal Project Manager for a Software Engineering project to augment our on-device maps with additional data from a companion mobile app, which includes managing the contractor doing part of the work.

Took on the role of Product Owner for the IDE that our department created and maintains. In practice it morphed into more of "plan and manage the workload of the Software Engineering department and juggle a lot of competing project deadlines across teams of Engineers with different skill sets" rather than really owning a "product", as much of the work we do doesn't go into the IDE. A lot of time was spent interfacing with various internal and external groups to understand what we needed to do, and when we needed to do it, as well as to de-conflict projects if timelines weren't going to work.

I worked on three different teams as a Software Engineer, working in different languages and on different target devices.1. Manufacturing Test Engineer: creating and supporting software in an electronics manufacturing environment. Lots of C# and SQL here. My program for logging and tracking work cell issues is still used and displayed prominently on the production floor today.2. Desktop, cloud, mobile: this team wore a lot of hats. We maintained and improved a desktop IDE to design and package the software that gets loaded onto our displays. And a cloud-facing tool to distribute our IDE. And the Azure instances to store the packages and host our various endpoints. And a website to perform administrative functions for the Azure instances to manage the users/packages for the other tools. And iOS/Android mobile applications to demonstrate mobile communications with our displays. C#, Javascript, SQL, Swift/Kotlin were among the languages used on this team.3. Embedded software: created and maintained applications that run on our displays on top of the QNX operating system. Worked with mapping engines, Bluetooth and other infotainment, quick-boot solutions, implementation of new package file formats, etc. Largely C++, though the mobile work followed me from team to team, so we did a lot more Swift and Kotlin to help integrate with a customer's mapping solution.
