I work on the R&D Materials team at Biomerics to help customers develop their ideas into marketable, life-changing products. I completed a Master's degree in Tissue Engineering that focused on three-dimensional platforms for skeletal muscle cell growth using native and transgenic silkworm silks as the growth substrate. I now work closely with customers to develop polyurethane chemistries specific to their application. I have experience in statistical analysis, project management, leadership, communication, and presenting. I am eager to learn and enjoy the challenge of my job because I see new applications of Biomerics materials everyday.

R&D Polymer Engineer IiBiomerics Mar 2022 - Mar 2024Salt Lake City, Utah, Us-Technical lead that works closely with customers to determine optimal polyurethane chemistries for a wide variety of new applications-Contact point and expert for customer questions about materials used in their existing technologies. -Successfully managed OQ and PQ validations for high complexity device. -
R&D Polymer Engineer IBiomerics Aug 2020 - Mar 2022Salt Lake City, Utah, Us -
Research Specialist IiPolarityte Dec 2019 - May 2020Salt Lake City, Utah, UsAs part of a three-person team, used characterization modalities to assess technology success. Modalities included Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies, rheology, microCT, atomic force microscopy, high-content screening, and mechanical testing. Designed the experimental protocols for these modalities depending on material type and analyzed data to understand the effectiveness of novel treatments using molecular and structural properties as key metrics.• Developed total study plan for novel biomaterial mechanical, molecular, in vitro, and in vivo characterization of biomaterial• Learned function and expected output of five new modalities -
Graduate Research Assistant - Dr. Elizabeth Vargis Tissue Engineering LabUtah State University - Dr. Elizabeth Vargis Tissue Engineering Lab Jan 2018 - Jan 2020Developing a novel three-dimensional cell culture device that yields muscle tissue that more closely resembles native in vivo tissue than a standard two-dimensional tissue culture flask. This device uses silkworm substrates woven onto a laser-engraved PMMA chassis, utilizing the biocompatibility of both materials. Mouse myoblasts are seeded onto the three-dimensional silk fibers, allowing them to grow in a suspended environment—preferable to traditional growth surfaces.• Analyzing expression increases between experimental silk substrates and polystyrene tissue culture surfaces• Defining molecular biology and mechanical testing methods to prove device efficacy and tissue healthThe development of this device has been an intensive course in general device design, recognizing and eliminating failure points, the integration of biology and materials science, organization of research failures (and occasional successes, of course), and self-motivation and perseverance.

Laboratory AssistantUtah State University - Dr. Elizabeth Vargis Tissue Engineering Lab Jun 2015 - Dec 2017• Perform laboratory experimentation to simulate muscular atrophy in microgravity• Assist in developing laboratory protocols by compiling data from journal publications• Utilize instrumentation such as ViCell, confocal microscope, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer• Report regularly to graduate student and Dr. Vargis on cell growth and progress
-
Intellectual Property AssistantUtah State University - Division Of Technology Transfer Services May 2015 - Sep 2018Supported technology commercialization and intellectual property protection. I developed several SOPs for required reporting to funding agencies and for distribution of university technologies to consumers. Drafted patents and found prior art to improve the strength of claims for university technologies. Researched available markets for technologies.• Coordinated elimination of multi-year backlog of 47 federal funding requirements within the iEdison platform• Performed prior art and marketability searches for over 70 university technologies
-
Research & Development Engineering InternVerum Tcs May 2017 - Sep 2017Within this startup company, was given a large project to design a method for tracking a fiber optic PICC line through the vasculature to the cavoatrial junction of the heart. Created a blood-mimicking solution and established a method for how blood flow direction can be used to determine fiber optic placement.• Designed second-generation product feature as part of a $20-million technology acquisition• Designed calibration method for system to monitor kidney health during surgery—currently in human trial phase
