Aerospace Engineer Ii

Centennial, Co, Us

As a level II engineer, I was granted greater range of autonomy to create my own solutions and conferred ownership of my products. Ownership obligates me to be personally responsible for all the work I produce and review.I excelled when given opportunities to research and develop new products. The hydrogen fuel of the Delta IV RS-68 provided many challenges in combustion heating and hazardous gas management. Adequate tools to address these issues did not exist at the time within ULA, so we made our own which was cheaper and provided results faster than any commercially available program.Increasing the capability of our group ensured we continually exceeded the expectations of our customers. Increased fidelity of plume heating and contamination environments were provided with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo analysis which we implemented through collaboration with NASA Johnson Space Center. Upgraded vehicle systems always provided the opportunity to improve supporting subsystems which ultimately increase the reliability of the entire launch vehicle. With upgraded avionics and increased thermal demands, I sought out training to utilize our CFD programs to develop a new Environmental Control System that could meet those demands.

Aerospace Engineer I

Centennial, Co, Us

New hires are expected to hit the ground running. From day one, I was expected to familiarize myself with the launch vehicle hardware and work collaboratively with other groups to improve flight hardware. There was no delineation between the importance of products developed by new hires or experienced technical leads. My very first project was to develop venting and aerodynamic load requirements for the Atlas V 400-ISA -- an upgraded composite structure that mated the booster and upper stage -- which was designed to reduce per-unit cost and increase launch capability.Using my coursework focus on thermodynamics, I quickly found myself to be the go-to resource for convective heat transfer analysis within our group. Adding the heat transfer component to the established aerodynamics analysis eliminated or simplified downstream post-processing.
