How did someone in Finance end up in HR?After years of planning to take my love of spreadsheets into the world of Finance, dreaming of all the balance sheets and forecasts, I found myself overlooking Sales Compensation for over 100 sales employees in a Finance team. Instead of chasing debtors, I was being chased by salespeople to check their commission. Instead of the month-end pressures, I was living the payroll cut-off life. Recharges became a thing of the past, and I was gradually turning away from my goal achieving a CIMA qualification and instead used my spare time to learn more technical skills in VBA and SQL. This experience put me at a crossroads with my career and I wanted my next role to be outside of Finance, but everything from University to that point had pigeon-holed me as a Finance analyst. Luckily, the giant organisation that RELX is, there were many internal opportunities to apply for and I was fortunate to have exposure to many areas in the business, so I was able to use my internal network to get more insight in available opportunities. That’s when I came across a job spec for a role in Reward supporting 1000s of employees in compensation globally. I had never heard of Reward before then and I had a lot of questions for my colleagues in HR, but I took the leap of faith and have never looked back. My love of spreadsheets continue and now are a source of HR dashboards and insightful analysis to support HR business partners with their strategic and operational decisions.

Reward ManagerLexisnexis Jun 2017 - Nov 2021New York City, Ny, UsSupporting LexisNexis UK, Nexis Solutions Global and RELX Corporate with their Reward requirements from compensation proposals, Gender Pay Reporting and the annual reward cycle. My role is to push the business to meet our Reward principles of equity and applying best practice. Most recently, our Reward team created a RELX-wide global job architecture whilst switching systems from Peoplehub to Workday to enable further projects to enhance the employee experience and create better insights in pay & reward.Alongside my role, I continue to drive People Analytics at LNUK to help support HR with their strategic decision making. I have produced meaningful dashboards on recruitment, L&D, reward and turnover with analysis on areas of concern to reduce employee fatigue and overall cost. My goal, whilst slowly learning Python, is to move towards predictive analytics to improve attrition. -
Commercial Finance AnalystLexisnexis Dec 2015 - Jun 2017New York City, Ny, UsBeing responsible for designing, improving and implementing the Sales Incentive Plan gave me more confidence that I knew what I was doing. Being able to step closer to the commercial impact of our decisions gave me wider exposure of how our business operates. Alongside this, I completely redesigned the target setting process using SQL management studio to distribute targets in January rather than late April, while reducing the scale of work for myself and the commission analyst and reducing the risk of manual error. This role also gave me an opportunity to supervise a colleague, whilst training them in VBA and SQL to produce greater innovation in our team. Once I moved into my role in Reward, the colleague stepped into my role with the same confidence I had a couple of years before. -
Commissions AnalystLexisnexis Oct 2014 - Dec 2015New York City, Ny, UsTaking my first sidestep from "pure" Finance, my role was to track and report on sales commissions and support the salespeople with their queries over pay, performance and their Sales Incentive Plans. This role supported the Commercial Finance Analyst role that I would be promoted into. -
Commercial Management Accountant AssistantEndemol Uk Limited Oct 2013 - Oct 2014Shepherds Bush, London, GbAfter graduating, I knew I wanted to move into the entertainment sector and thought it would be sensible to utilise the Finance degree that I am still paying for. I decided to take the risk of taking a maternity cover role with Endemol over other full-time opportunities because it promised more work on spreadsheets in a fun office.A lot of similar tasks to my Warner Bros. role, but this time I had the strength of excel from the beginning and began to automate work as much as possible. This was the beginning of my passion to improve processes and suggest ideas to leadership. Whilst my time was short, Endemol really helped steer me towards a lot of the things I am doing in my role now. -
Tax And Stats InternWarner Bros. Entertainment Group Of Companies Jul 2011 - Jul 2012Burbank, Ca, UsAs a huge film fan, landing my university job placement at Warner Bros. was a dream. Although I wasn't going to appear in the Dark Knight or pass scripts to Christopher Nolan, working within an industry you love is always a plus. Raising invoices for cinemas created mini-conversations of how well a movie was doing and gave me an unusual skill of knowing where the nearest cinema was in the UK (Sadly this skill has been lost). Chasing debtors wasn't my favourite part of the role, but you were sometimes left with the most unusual reasons for someone not paying, like "the wife has my chequebook and she is in Cornwall for the week". The royalty reporting was the beginning of my advanced excel skills, deciding to tackle the widely-discussed VLOOKUP and providing useful analysis of Expenses and VAT for the US Treasury team. I then proceeded to use excel at every opportunity, from picking my fantasy football team to budgeting my final year at University. -
Summer InternExecution Noble & Company Limited Jul 2010 - Aug 2010An internship that welcomed the commute to the city of London. My role was to support the Sales Traders with a client contact list for emerging markets, hot drinks and losing at a game of pool. This experience completely blew away my expectations of "pencil pushing" and really gave me hopes that a career in Finance wouldn't be as mundane as perceived. -
Sales AssistantJohn Lewis Sep 2007 - Sep 2009London, England, GbMy first job in a suit was to assist Bluewater customers with their Chinaware purchases. Tackling the complexities of Earthenware vs. Stoneware and always promoting Denby for it's resilience in stock room accidents. I loved my time at John Lewis and would always welcome an opportunity to return, but perhaps not on the shop floor.
