In 2018 I was Programme Manager for the New Zealand Government’s Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction. With my co-lead (Head of Secretariat), I was responsible for recruiting and leading a large team of people to support the Government-appointed Inquiry Panel. The ultimate product was a report that set out the state of mental health and addiction (and services) in New Zealand, and that proposed a strategy for better supporting New Zealanders’ mental health and well-being. As part of that the Panel and team engaged widely across New Zealand (400+ meetings) and developed / commissioned a number of documents summarising the evidence and peoples’ views. The ultimate product was a report to the Government from the Inquiry Panel with a series of recommendations for action. Following completion of my Masters in Environmental Studies, I took on a role at Council reviewing the range of state of the environment monitoring undertaken by Council, or by other agencies in relation to Council activities, reviewing and developing options for long term sustainable monitoring of key environmental indicators.

As an Environmental Health Officer, I was responsible for supporting the effective implementation (education/enforcement) of a broad range of legislation with a focus on the protection and promotion of public health. Areas I was responsible for included: food safety, noise control, air quality, hairdresser regulations, public pools hygiene, bylaw enforcement and resolution of public nuisance.
