About Matthew Arno

Genomics professional with more than 13 years experience in transcriptomics research, from microarrays and NGS to high-throughput validation studies with automation. Both wet lab and data analysis. My extensive Bioinformatics skills have led to >30 peer-reviewed scientific publications.Team leader, business manager (budgets, finances, accounts), data manager/analyst.Recently completed an MSc in Bioinformatics with Systems Biology (Distinction) at Birkbeck University, London, specialising in RNAseq data analysis.I have contributed to research on stem cell-derived epidermal models, paediatric peanut allergy responses, and gene regulation networks in post-transplant liver regeneration to highlight a few recent studies.

    Laboratory Team Leader
Edinburgh Genomics Feb 2020 - Present
    Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Heading up the lab at Edinburgh Genomics. I have a wonderful team of fantastic scientists, built from scratch mostly through various lockdowns; we've come through some tough times but are all the stronger for it.
  • Edinburgh Genomics
    Project Manager
    Edinburgh Genomics Jan 2017 - Jan 2020
    Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Managing genomics projects (NGS, arrays, etc.) at Edinburgh Genomics. Upwards of 300 projects per year (~80-100 concurrent projects). Range of Illumina, PacBio, Nanopore projects.
  • King'S College London
    Genomics Facilities Manager
    King'S College London Jul 2003 - Jan 2017
    London, United Kingdom
I was responsible for launching Genomics core services at King's College London. Since 2003 I have grown a simple genomics lab into a successful, well-maintained, sustainable, cost-recovering research facility, used by hundreds of researchers, and employing numerous technicians.I provide expert and comprehensive support to dozens of diverse research groups within and external to King's College London, from initial project design through to management and delivery of results. I lead and develop a team of technicians working across multiple campuses to deliver these projects.Recent projects include:Analysis of transcriptional signals in stem cell-derived models of an epidermal barrier - I was able to use powerful software to demonstrate similarities in gene expression patterns between these in vitro cultured cells and their natural counterparts. These models will lead to a better understanding of disease processes and pathologies and may also aid the development of drug development and testing.MicroRNA profiling of liver regeneration - we showed that regulatory microRNA (miRNA) patterns differ significantly between post-transplantation liver regeneration and failure. Processes involving the immune system and cell-cycle/proliferation were found to be most perturbed in this dichotomy of regeneration, allowing a first insight into the molecular nature of liver regeneration.I am solely responsible for experimental design, project management and bioinformatic analysis of resulting genomics data for most of my published studies.
  • King'S College London
    Postdoctoral Researcher
    King'S College London Dec 2001 - Jul 2003
    London, United Kingdom
Initiated expression profiling of various haematological malignancies including 5q- MDS, in Dept of Haematological Medicine at King's College Hospital. Liaised with clinicians to organise sample collection with accompanying clinical data. Processing and analysis of samples for whole genome expression profiling using Affymetrix GeneChip microarrays. Developed data analysis skills using genomics software packages. Successfully optimised processing protocols for working with very small clinical samples.
