This role provides high quality and commercially focussed accounting technical advice to all of Rio Tinto's assets within the Southern Hemisphere with particular focus on Iron Ore and Aluminium. This includes preparation of accounting positions for consideration by internal senior management and external auditors. While the role covers all accounting matters key areas include:• Support to various divestment and acquisition process including provision of financial information and due diligence.• Transition to new leasing standards along with on-going support• Closure.• Impairment.• Capital• Review of major projects including business disposals for accounting implications and disposal support.In addition I provide support to Rio Tinto's external reporting process to ensure that reported numbers are accounting standard compliant and consistent with Rio Tinto's policies.

I provided consulting support to the disposal process for several coal mines and development properties within the Rio Tinto Coal portfolio. This role reporting to the Chief Financial Officer Copper and Coal is providing technical accounting and business support to various divestment, acquisitions and re-organisation projects within Coal.Key Responsibilities:• Development of prospectus financial information and supporting documentation for significant disposal.• Execution of post-closing activities• Research and concluding complex accounting matters including agreement with external auditor and Rio Tinto.• Provision of support to Deal Team on financial implications including presentation to potential acquirers and to Banks• Lead finance separation stream including ERP and Business Process outsourcing.• Management of accounting, legal, taxation and commercial elements of due diligence on potential acquisition.

This role reported into the Chief Financial Officer.Responsibilities expanded from the General Manager - Business Services to include a bauxite mine and alumina refinery. In addition the role included involvement in the disposal processes for Pacific Aluminium from Rio Tinto although ultimately these were not finalised as the disposal process was terminated. Key Responsibilities:• Development of carve-out financing statements in the disposal processes for Pacific Aluminium from Rio Tinto • Created and enhanced management reports and presented to senior management and shadow board.• Liaison with Investment Banks and other divestment advisors.• Developed and implemented a strategy for the separating finance accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets and expense management systems to achieve a fully stand-alone entity.• Led the Shared Service function, including payroll, cash management and taxation.• Enhanced and managed comprehensive financial delegations policies and procedures.• Provided support to critical improvement projects such as power negotiations and gas supply arrangements including devising complex structures to achieve off-balance sheet financing.• Built, led and developed a team of 35 qualified and non-qualified employees with low turnover.Achievements:• Significantly reduced costs and increased accountability in the Shared Services function.• Lead finance operations to achieve a situation where they are performing at benchmark levels with a lower total cost during period of significant change.• Integration of large bauxite mine and refinery into financial and control processes.• Embedded a private equity mindset within the business with a key focus on cash-on-cash returns. • Separated and retendered the insurance program which led to significant (20%) cost savings without an increase in the risk profile. • Led the re-integration process for the finance function fully re-instating reporting protocols prior to year-end.

Rio Tinto Alcan, part of Rio Tinto, is a successful aluminium smelting group with an annual turnover of approximately US$3bn. Pacific Aluminium currently comprised of 5 smelters and a power station in Australia and New Zealand along with a sales office in Singapore and various other corporate entities.Key Responsibilities of the role, which reported into the CEO, included:• Board member of operating smelters (turnover in excess of US$1bn) tasked with developing business strategy and overseeing management performance.• Member of 4 person Executive Committee.• Design, preparation and presentation of financial performance and issues to senior Rio Tinto management.• Management and financial reporting of the Group actual, plan and forecast results within RTA and statutory accounts for over 10 subsidiaries including provision of technical accounting advice.• Business Analysis function and provision of quality support to decision-making and strategic direction within the region.• Financial controls, risk and compliance across the region including Sarbanes Oxley, audit forum and credit committee• Building, leading and developing a team of qualified and competent accounting professionals.• Liaison with Divestment team to develop key financial information for partial sale.Achievements:• Provided support to negotiation of 10 year power contract for smelter.• Developed open and transparent management reports which were highly valued by Senior Management.• Low employee turnover despite high level of change and uncertainty.• Integrated new Chinese and Australian based smelters into reporting and compliance protocols achieving Group requirements in terms of quality and timeliness.• Provided support to disposal of China based smelter

Following the acquisition of a major global aluminium business (Alcan) integration into Rio Tinto was required. I developed the strategy to be adopted to integrate the global financial reporting systems and processes including development of reporting framework and delegation policy. The role focused on:- External Financial Reporting systems.- Internal Management Reporting systems.- Planning and forecast.- Financial Controls.Alcan was successfully incorporated into Rio Tinto and met all reporting requirements with headcount reductions

This secondment role reported to the General Manager – Business Services Centre and then Chief Financial Officer and covered 3 large aluminium smelters, power station, bauxite mine and 2 alumina refineriesKey Responsibilities:• Consolidation and presentation of group results (actual and plan) for both management and external reporting including assuring that in compliance with accounting and Rio Tinto standards. The complex Group consisted of multiple locations, multiple countries, multiple products and multiple ownership vehicles.• Process improvements across the consolidation process including reducing reporting timeframe from Work Day 10 to Work Day 5.• Development of accounting policies and provision of technical advice to site accounting teams and projects including transition to IFRS.• Preparation of investor and insurance presentations.• Lead “Plan and Manage” thread of two SAP upgrades.• Graduate Champion for the finance team across RTA.• Provision of ad-hoc advice to senior management.

Financial Analyst – Controllers At various times responsible for Energy (Coal and Uranium), Forestry, Aluminium and Iron Ore portfolios within the Rio Tinto Head-office finance teamKey Responsibilities:• Critical review of results and submissions of allocated product groups spanning the globe.• Presentation to management on product group performance.• Research and consideration of changes in accounting standards and provision of guidance to site including acquisition accounting.• Involved in the preparation of the Group’s annual financial statements and US filings.• Support provided to the Energy Product Group in understanding performance and identification of improvement areas and compiling product group plans and presentations and assisting in development of Product Group strategy.• Involved in a three person cost / performance review at operating site (Rossing) enabling immediate cost reductions and identifying areas for future improvement in terms of financial results and business process.

Key Responsibilities included:• Design, documentation and implementation of system of internal controls.• Review and management of head-office payroll.• Implementation of Oracle payroll system.• Preparation of disaster management plan especially with regard to Y2K issues

This role was based in Windhoek in Namibia and reported into the Chief Financial OfficerKey Responsibilities included:• Long range plan modelling and strategic review including interfacing with the London based sales and marketing team.• Monitoring and advice on non-core company activities.• Data collection, interpretation and reporting to CFO and Managing Director.• Implementation of SAP payroll and time management modules.• Ad-hoc projects and investigations.• Administration of two payrolls covering 35 employees.

Professional experience, in addition to standard audit, includes:- A seven month secondment to the management consultancy division during which I was involved in developing long range plans for the sale of the Royal Dockyards.- Various assignments with the insolvency practice which involved the preparation and appraisal of business plans and development of survival strategies.- Various assignments concerned with compliance with US grants regulations.- Developing testing protocols and reporting formats for major new local and central Government internal audit.- Training of junior accountants.
