Growing up, I had a passion for putting things together and seeing how they work along the way. My father regularly brings up a story of how one Christmas when I was a child, I received an automatic baseball pitching toy. I was too excited to wait for him to help me build it so I took it outside and put it together myself. But not every attempt I made at building something was as successful as this one. Many times I failed to build or fix something because I lacked a fundamental understanding of how it worked. But this didn't stop me from approaching the next challenge eagerly and with the lessons I learned. This is what drew me to become a mechanical engineer. During my academic career at Southern Utah University I was involved in a multitude of projects. Of these, one of the most important was my involvement in the SUU Baja Club. The SUU Baja Club's goal is to design, build, and drive a Baja vehicle to the specifications of the SAE Baja competition, then compete in said competition. When I first joined this club it was in its conception. There were a handful of core members who showed up regularly and progress was made very slowly. When the opportunity arose for a new Club President to be elected I seized it along with a colleague of mine. Serving as Co-President I accelerated the progress of the club through goal oriented scheduling and outlining a chain of command. I managed multiple teams of engineers and oversaw stress testing of critical components of the vehicle. When needed, I helped with fabrication of the frame and suspension. Ultimately the club was successful in its goal of making it to the SAE Baja competition but not without many struggles along the way. I take pride in the fact that I helped the club as a whole tackle those hurdles that we encountered and similar to my experiences growing up, took the failures as a lesson learnt and applied it to my next project.
