The Boston Indicators Project (www.bostonindicators.org) is housed at the Boston Foundation and aims to democratize access to information, foster informed public discourse, track progress on shared civic goals, and report on change in ten sectors: Civic Vitality, Cultural Life and the Arts, the Economy, Education, the Environment, Health, Housing, Public Safety, Technology, and Transportation. Matthew joined our team at a very busy time. We were redesigning our website and developing an open-source platform for data visualization, as well as starting the research and writing process for our biennial Indicators Report. The website project was especially complex as we needed to balance the recommendations of our developers with the needs of our users, collaborators, and other stakeholders. Matthew always provided insightful feedback and useful suggestions as we debated functionality and aesthetics in the new site. He was able to digest the complex research framework of the Boston Indicators Project and help us figure out how to communicate it to a broad, diverse audience. Also, Matthew’s research and writing skills were valuable to us throughout the summer. He focused on sectors such as Housing, Technology, Transportation, and Health to update the key indicators we measure. This task is especially impressive because Matthew was able to find oftentimes obscure datasets with very little guidance. Additionally, he completed media scans and reviewed newspaper articles from the last two years to help us understand the long-term trends in each sector, which directly shaped the framing and content of the next Indicators Report. Matthew was a pleasure to work with, a very respectful colleague, and focused individual."
