During my time at the University of Denver, I have had the privilege of working for two renowned professors: Rachel Epstein and George DeMartino. My work for Dr. Epstein focused on European banks during the financial crisis, and involved hunting down (often obscure) information from central bank websites and financial statements, making calculations and analysis, and presenting conclusions for her forthcoming book. My ongoing work for Dr. DeMartino involves reading and summarizing philosophical articles related to risk as part of a major project to address and reform the process of economic policymaking.

Chongqing Municipality, People'S Republic Of China

For two years, I served in the Peace Corps as a TEFL teacher in Chongqing, China. I also tutored students for preparation of the IELTS test (required for Chinese students to study abroad), hosted a movie club on campus, and helped Chinese teachers to incorporate Western education methods into their instruction, as well as doing miscellaneous favors and odd jobs in my community.As a representative of the United States, I was expected to conduct myself with honor and respect to host country nationals at all times. My service involved creating inter-cultural communications, networking with community leaders, gaining their trust, developing and implementing programs on my own initiative, immersing myself in local culture and adapting to their way of life, representing the history and values of the United States to the Chinese people, and accurately and fairly representing the people of China once I returned home to the United States. I consider my service one of the greatest and most fulfilling accomplishments of my life.

I taught English speaking, listening, reading and writing at the undergraduate level in Chongqing University of Technology, a large engineering school in central China.To be an effective teacher, I first had to understand Chinese culture and how students behave in a classroom. After a rocky few weeks, I eventually learned how to connect and engage with Chinese students, and draw them out of their shells. This involved a variety of tactics: playing games, journal writing, team work, and setting a firm tone but still allowing a relaxed environment where language acquisition could occur naturally. I devoted considerable time to lesson planning, participating in English Corner (informal conversations with college students), and informal tutoring beyond what was expected of me. A foreign teacher could chose their own emphasis, and given my background, I wanted to help my students develop critical thinking skills. Education in Asia is often done by rote and culture emphasizes deference and submission; the result is that students often cannot think for themselves, or are afraid to express their opinions. I tried to incorporate critical thinking in every lesson I wrote, whether it was explaining the most common fallacies during classroom debates or asking for justification of their opinions during oral presentations. I am happy to report there was a noticeable improvement in critical thinking skills, as judged by improvement in oral arguments and journal entries. I believe this, just as much as English, is the skill that can make the greatest difference in their lives.

I began as a newsroom intern for a legislative-tracking service on the US Congress, and later worked as a reporter for Santa Barbara News-Press, with an emphasis on local politics and government. I have also been published in nine additional newspapers and magazines, including Human Events, Doublethink Magazine, Libertas, The Gazette-Telegraph and CongressNow.While I eventually left journalism, it provided an excellent education in communication expertise. I tackled complex subjects, such as zoning issues, water rights or the legislative process, and broke them down into easy-to-understand articles for the average reader. The ability to quickly synthesize information into a coherent narrative has translated nicely into my new career as an economic/financial analyst. I also learned how to meet short deadlines in a high-stress environment, network with community leaders, probe for information, investigate claims, cultivate relationships, and prize accuracy in everything I say or write.
