The Fire Chief is the Chief Executive Officer of the Fire Department, appointed by and responsible to the Governmental Leadership for the effective, efficient and legal conduct of the fire department and its employees. The Fire Chief performs a variety of technical, administrative and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing, and implementing all aspects of the fire department. Such work includes, but is not limited to, creating and maintaining department policies and budgets, ensuring required records are submitted complete and accurate, and ensuring all department services are continually monitored to prevent the loss of life and property by fire and/or emergency medical conditions.

The Deputy Fire Chief assumes a management role sharing the responsibilities of the overall operation of the Department with the Fire Chief. The Deputy Chief is primarily responsible for the efficient and safe operation of both the Fire Prevention and the Fire Suppression Division and is the head of the EMS operations in the department. additional roles; involved in budgetary, takes charge of manpower, vehicle Maintenance, vehicle and equipment procurement. Essential Functions;Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, plans, organizes, directs, and administers all operations of the fire department assigned by the Fire Chief. In the absence of the Fire Chief the Deputy Fire Chief performs ALL applicable duties of the Fire Chief in a sufficient manner until arrival/return of the Fire Chief. 1. Develops and coordinates plans for efficient and effective operations within his assigned areas. 2. Responsible for overseeing all policies, procedures and practices related to department training and safety. 3. Consults with the Chief Engineer and other company officers to insure all equipment, apparatus, PPE, testing and servicing and maintenance is preformed as required. 4. Makes recommendations to the Fire Chief relative to the long-term needs for maintaining, and improving effective operations within his assigned areas; 5. Oversees the administration of his assigned areas; 6. Annually recommends a proposed budget with respect to his area to the Fire Chief; 7. Attends training programs oriented to the duties of the Deputy Fire Chief; 8. Oversees and provides for departmental operations at all levels to ensure safe and effective operations; 9. May serve on associations, boards, committee's, etc. to insure department representation. 10. Responds to emergency calls as necessary and may assume command and direct activities (in the absence of the fire chief) under the department's jurisdiction and authority.

The Fire Marshal is the head of the Fire Prevention Division and the Fire Investigation Unit. The duties of the Fire Marshal also include the organizing of fire inspections and the pre-incident planning of the sites in the Jurisdiction that have hazardous materials. Responsible for the enforcement of local, state, and federal fire codes and oversees the site-plan review process for all new commercial construction within the Township of Waterford and The City of Pontiac.Essential Functions:1. Inspect all commercial and public buildings for safety and code violations.2. Perform building and site plan review for all new construction for compliance with fire codes including automatic fire suppression and detection systems; prepare written fire code requirements; conduct final occupancy inspections.3. Consult with contractors, engineers, architects, developers, builders, property owners and other agencies regarding construction projects and activities.4. Interpret enforcement guidelines to department personnel, citizens and professional agencies; organize and maintain records.5. Conduct fire investigations and investigate explosions to determine cause and origin; respond to and perform inspections originated from citizen complaints.6. Present fire and safety education programs for the community, instruct groups on fire safety and prevention methods and participate in other educational programs for various groups and general public.7. Prepare various reports on operations and activities; city streets and business listings; prepare written reports on all inspections, investigations, plan reviews and system tests.8. Assist in maintaining operational readiness of fire response capabilities.

The Captain Inspector is second in command of the Fire Prevention Division and the Fire Investigation Unit. The duties of the Captain Inspector also include the organizing of fire inspections and the pre-incident planning of the sites in the Jurisdiction that have hazardous materials.
