Dr. Matthew Davies earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1988 and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University in1993. He was a researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology where he was responsible for applied research in manufacturing and measurement in areas ranging from ultra-precision machining to the high-speed machining of aerospace components. While at NIST, he worked with many industrial partners including Boeing, Ford, General Motors, McDonnell Douglas, Johnson & Johnson, Ingersoll, Synthes, Stryker and Timken. His work on manufacturing science earned him a Department of Commerce Bronze Medal in 1998 and the Society of Manufacturing Engineering Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award in 2000. He became a Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (www.uncc.edu) in the 2002., where he started a research program in freeform and structured optics and is the leader of the Freeform Optics Research Group that works with many industrial partners including Corning, Digital Optics Corporation, Five Focal, Raytheon, ORAFOL and Rochester Precision Optics. Dr. Davies is also a site Director of the Center for Freeform Optics (http://centerfreeformoptics.org/) a collaborative consortium with the University of Rochester with 17 non-academic members. Dr. Davies has taught classes ranging from the Dynamics of Production Machinery to Waves & Optics and was the recipient of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016 (http://teachingaward.uncc.edu/). He has more than 60 technical publications and three patents. He is a Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering Research (http://www.cirp.net/.) He was a co-founder of OptoMill Solutions LLC.
