Dr. Matt Dearing has over two decades of research and practice in U.S. national security, irregular warfare, and military affairs. He is a proven leader in professional military education, curriculum innovation, and organizational collaboration. He currently serves as the Associate Dean of Curriculum and Programs at the College of International Security Affairs, National Defense University, where he is the focal point for academic planning and curriculum development. His research areas include comparative political violence, irregular warfare, and regional studies in South Asia and Africa. He is author of Militia Order in Afghanistan: Guardians or Gangsters (Routledge 2021) and is writing a historical narrative of the Malawi Young Pioneers. He has also published on terrorism, conflict stabilization, security sector reform, and field research methods in a range of peer-reviewed journals. Prior to joining the National Defense University, Dr. Dearing served as an irregular warfare advisor in Afghanistan, a research associate at the Naval Postgraduate School, and a rifleman in the U.S. Marine Corps. He earned his Ph.D. and MA degrees in Security Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, and a BA in International Political Economy from the University of California Berkeley.
