My role is to provide a broad remit of regulatory advice and guidance to the firm with a focus on conflicts of interest, authorisation matters and SRA compliance. I work with senior stakeholders including members of the board, the managing and senior partner and provide targeted and risk based advice to all levels within the firm.Responsibilities: Supporting the Director of Risk and the COLP in discharging their responsibilities.Providing general risk and compliance advice to members of the firm.Subject matter expert for all SRA authorisation matters.One of three conflict advisers (alongside the COLP and the Director of Risk).Advising on POCA and the submission of SARs/DAMLs.Approving / advising on outside engagement terms.Updating internal policies and procedures based on legislative and SRA rules changes/guidance.Co-ordinating and managing the firm’s bulk renewal exercise.Role holder appointments (COLP/COFA/IDO).Undertaking internal investigations and advising on potential risk and compliance issues and whether matters are reportable. Reviewing and advising on inward and outward secondment agreements.Preparing management and board reports identifying risk trends and horizon scanning.Advising on internal governance arrangements and maintaining a central log of authorised decision makers.Undertaking complaints where they are SRA/conduct focused.Advising on requirements around continuing competence.Line management (two risk paralegals).

My role focused on providing a broad spectrum of regulatory advice to the firm including managing and resolving possible conflicts of interest and issues of confidentiality. I advised on authorisation matters, terms of engagement, the SRA’s Codes of Conduct and potential money laundering reports to the NCA. I was also responsible for monitoring regulatory changes and updating the firm’s internal policies and guidance documents and negotiating and agreeing secondment agreements.

I was an adjudicator with the SRA for eight years. I exercised the highest level of delegated regulatory decision-making authority for the SRA and made around 500 regulatory decisions. I dealt with disputed, high profile and/or complex cases which included breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Accounts Rules, AML issues and conflict/confidentiality matters.I exercised the full range of disciplinary sanctions and controls available to the SRA. I made both first instance decisions and determined appeals. I also chaired adjudication panels which dealt with appeals from single adjudicator decisions. I also conducted interviews / meetings with the regulated person as part of the decision-making process.Responsibilities: To make fair, proportionate, and targeted regulatory decisions.Chair adjudication panels.Develop and train existing panel advisers and panel adjudicators.Develop and deliver training to case officers and departments on decision-making and technical issues.Contribute to wider initiatives and cross-organisation projects such as training for tomorrow, the new Standards and Regulations (2019) and changes to the disciplinary procedure rules and the SRA’s decision-making framework.Managed five panel advisers (between 2019 and 2021) and conducted reviews and appraisals.Weekly and monthly KPI reporting.

I provided contentious and non-contentious construction and engineering advice to private and public bodies, both domestic and international, while at the firm. I moved to Squire Patton Boggs as part of a wider team move from DLA Piper.Responsibilities: Primary or assistant fee earner on transactions and disputes.Drafting and negotiating bespoke and standard form construction and engineering contacts (JCT, NEC and FIDIC).On contentious matters - providing initial advice, drafting, and responding to pre-action correspondence, disclosure, instructing counsel and experts, reviewing experts’ reports, drafting claim forms, acknowledgment of service, allocation questionnaires and applications for strike out.Supervision and mentoring of trainees.Time recording, file management and billing.Delegating work and running bespoke project teams.Provide external training.Business development (internal and external).
