Test Automation Manager

Versailles, Oh, Us

As the Test Automation Manager, Mr. Eakin is responsible for creating and implementing Midmark ITs overall Testing Strategy and promoting a test-first mindset throughout the organization. Aligning the Testing Strategy with 2-3 OKR's was key. Specfically 1 or 2 "big boulders" which drove all of our work. Next was aligning with Midmark's extensive QMS; which is driven by FDA regulations. Upon arrival at Midmark IT, Mr. Eakin found an organization early in its agile transformation and early in its testing and test automation journey. Most testing was manual. The little test automation in place was python-Robotframework and mostly happy path and negative testing. Not familiar with python, Mr. Eakin had to quickly learn it. Midmark also had no dedicated testers; which meant a lot of "hands on" testing work. Midmark’s primary applications are Oracle EBS, SalesForce and in-house MuleSoft built API’s. This also required a lot of learning as Mr. Eakin had never tested Oracle EBS or SalesForce before. The biggest challenge Mr. Eakin has faced is getting all testing into Azure DevOps. The agile teams have only been using ADO for a couple of years. So much of the requirements and test cases were scattered elsewhere. It's a large, on-going effort to get enough documentation into ADO to be able to test all of our Must Have, Should Have and Could Have requirements. This effort began laying the groundwork for determining what needs to be tested and how it should be tested (manual, automated using UiPath, automated using python/Robotframework).

Atdd Coach & Testing Practice Lead

South Jordan, Utah, Us

When hired Innovecture was looking at Practices to better align resources and help drive sales. Over the next few months Mr. Eakin worked with almost everyone at Innovecture, in the US, India and London to create a Practice Roadmap. This work-in-progress leveraged Mr. Eakin’s vast knowledge of how Practices are organized and aligned to help Innovecture drive future sales. His first assignment as an ATDD Coach was with the KNOW-it-all’s (as they became known). They had no working knowledge of agile and a legacy MEAN stack application originally built over 5 years ago. Team KNOW-it-all’s transformation covered every aspect: epic breakdowns into testable, behavior-driven User Stories with gherkin scripted Acceptance Criteria which were automated with Cypress; value streams and workflows; 3 Amigo’s meetings; sprint planning; creating a team heartbeat; retrospectives; and much more. To measure the transformation progress, Mr. Eakin helped create a transformation assessment. When the KNOW-it-all’s started they were 0’s (out of 4) across the board. In 3 months Mr. Eakin was able to raise the team up to a level 2 with many categories trending toward 3. In a follow-up assessment conducted in August, the team continued their agile transformation, scoring a 3 in many categories with some even trending toward 4’s.On his last assignment Mr. Eakin was part of a team of Agile Coaches. The PPM Program underwent a SAFe transformation prior to the teams arrival. But it was very poorly coached and trained. Mr. Eakin was spread across 8 US-based teams. His primary focus was Product Discovery Workshops; epic break-downs, user journey maps, behavior-driven User Stories with gherkin-scripted acceptance criteria, 3 Amigo’s team discussions. As the team moved into the 2nd PI, assessments were conducted on all PPM teams (which now included 4 International teams). Mr. Eakin’s focused shifted to educating and training various teams on gaps which were revealed during the assessments.

Argo Insurance - Test Lead

Dayton, Ohio, Us

Argo is a global business insurance company. In 2017 Centric was brought in to do a comprehensive Data Strategy to migrate over 40 source systems into 1 large Data Mart. The Data Mart will then be used by Argo Executives and Actuaries to drive business decisions. In January, 2019 Mr. Eakin was brought on and was faced with a daunting challenge. There are over 40 source systems on various platforms: Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and Snowflake which are being transformed into Postgres database on AWS. In addition to “normal” ETL testing, Data Governance rules are then applied to the data before it is finally moved into an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Since there has never been a “normalization” of the data effort at Argo, even migrating one database all the way through to the EDW was challenging. The goal of test automation was to free up the manual testers from the “routine” testing (validate record counts, validate all columns were migrated properly, validate all column data types were migrated correctly, validate Data Quality rules applied) so they can tackle the more challenging data issues which arose. While this data transformation was going on, the team was also a pilot project at Argo in Agile delivery. Argo has never tried Agile before and much of the team and its structure was driven by Argo. A major part of Mr. Eakin’s role on the project has been Agile transformation and helping establish an Agile roadmap. As the scope of the OneData Project grew so did the scope of the test automation framework. Data was being moved into a Landing Zone (PostgreSQL in AWS Cloud), a Data Lake (PostgreSQL in AWS Cloud), a Snowflake database (Snowflake in AWS Cloud) used by the Actuaries, and to the EDW (PostgreSQL in AWS Cloud). Results of the validations were uploaded to AWS Metrics (for monitoring and alerting) and to a reporting database we created which fed a PowerBI data movement dashboard.

Account Center is a secure online credit account management site. The site offers publicly available pages geared to marketing information and credit application as well as secure pages with credit-oriented financial services, bill pay, management of account information, loyalty and other marketing programs. Prior to Matthew's arrival as Test Strategist the Manual Testing team, the Automation Testing team and the rest of the Agile Team (Developers, ScrumMaster, Analysts) all reported to separate organizations. It was a very waterfall, silo'd approach to project delivery. The roadmap laid out a plan to first get a Smoke Test suite running to Pass in all environments, then specific functionality, then different browsers, and finally different mobile devices. • Reporting - Product Owners, ScrumMasters, Management and other staff contributors were involved in discussions develop reports on each build (is the environment ready to be tested?), on functional tests (are the changes introduced by the Developers working) and on regression tests (did the Developers break anything else in the application?), • Created job descriptions and job expectations for all Manual and Automation roles

Bmw Financial Services - Test Lead, Residual Value Setting Project

Paris, Paris - Issy-Les-Moulineaux, Fr

Created an overall Testing Strategy to build and test the Residual Value Setting application. Testing complexity included 3 phases (Administration, Setting, Reporting) an on-shore, off-shore mix of developers, and 3 testing environments (integration, QA, and acceptance) and included in-house manual business acceptance testing. Due to the projects iterative timeline and use of ATDD principles (both of which were new to BMWFS), a large emphasis was placed on the Test Strategy to help guide the entire team through daily work.Out of the Test Strategy we decided to leverage a ruby/cucumber automation framework for the integration, acceptance and in-house manual testing efforts of the web-based application. QualityCenter was used to coordinate BMW UAT testing. Reports were sent out daily to all Sogeti and BMW project team members detailing testing progress for the day. Completed Phase 1 (Administration) on time in spite of numerous set-backs presented by BMWFS. Automated all 134 scenarios using a ruby/cucumber framework. This framework was used in Phase 2 as a full regression suite and executed daily to testing numerous refactorings of the code and database due to BMW corporate standards. Zero defects were open entering and exiting Phase 1 UAT testing.
