Profile bio

About Matthew Fish

I have recently graduated Lancater Univeristy with a First Class Honours in Biomedical Science (with placement). My ambition is to join the NHS scientist training programme (STP) and specialise in either clinical biochemistry or haematology and blood transfusion as they are the areas of biomedicine I am most passionate about. First year modules in human physiology and diagnosis in biomedical science really sparked my interest in this field and I went on to gain a first in my first year of study. My undergraduate degree has so far given me great attention to detail in practical and written work, the ability to process and analyse data, and how important teamwork is to be successful. I spent a year on placement at Royal Preston Hospital, where I rotated through biochemistry, cellular pathology, microbiology, point of care, haematology and blood transfusion. The experience enabled me to build upon my existing knowledge, with a particular focus on case studies. Also, I completed my IBMS portfolio and I aim to register with the HCPC once I have graduated. I spent 6 months of my placement within haematology and blood transfusion, where I continually followed Standard Operating Procedures related to the handling and processing of patient samples. Regular attendance at haematology morphology meetings developed my knowledge of different blood disorders and contributed to my continual professional development. This experience lead me to becoming a medical laboratory assistant so I have experience of working out of normal hours. In my free time I love to watch and play many sports in particular football which has given me the chance to develop teamwork and communication skills, which is vital as being a biomedical scientist requires me to be able to clearly and accurately report results back to clinicians and provide a possible next step in diagnosing a patient . I have experience within a care giving environment as I worked in a residential care home for 3 years, which has given me the confidence to meet new people and it has shown me how important it is to show compassion to everybody. I was given the responsibility to train two new members of staff, during these shifts I displayed my ability to lead and teach new skills to new members of staff, both trainees became value members of the team after my guidance.
