Mechanical Engineering Intern
As an intern at Bosch Security Systems I was tasked with starting a study on all of the threaded fasteners that are used in the dynamic cameras that Bosch designs. The study focused on stainless steel fasteners in low copper alloy die cast aluminum and the goal of the study was to determine the appropriate torque loading to be applied to the fasteners so that they would achieve the correct clamp loading. This study involved gaining knowledge in experimentation and experimental design, knowledge in SAP, purchasing, Microsoft Excel, machining, basic CNC programming, PTC Creo 2.0, and becoming well versed in all of the factors that can affect the clamp load of a threaded fastener. In addition to the large scale study, I also performed a study on the accuracy of a CNC Mill to determine the tolerances to which a part could be made in house compared to the tolerances that were sent out to the manufacturer. To do this I programmed the CNC to make 145 holes evenly spaced from center to center on a piece of extruded aluminum. I then used a CMM machine to record the actual distance from the center of one hole to the next. After all of the data was recorded, I used Excel to make a plot of the data points and created a histogram of the data to better evaluate the accuracy of the CNC. This helped to determine the reliability of the CNC machine as well as the viability of certain tolerance ranges when looking at manufacturers. I had two other jobs that I performed while at my internship. The first job was to create a guard for a dynamometer that was used by the electrical engineers to measure torque values on all of the motors that are used in the camera units. The guard was constructed out of a quarter inch thick acrylic sheet and was used to block and deflect any materials that may come loose while testing the motors. The second job that I had was to machine a roof mounting plate for a camera unit. This new plate was smaller and allowed the camera to be re-positioned easily. Show less
