Matthew Goodson Email and Phone Number
I've worked designing smart toilets, smart towel heaters, meat smokers, hand powered water well drills (that can be flown to developing countries in checked luggage), vaccine carriers that can keep medicines cool for weeks at a time without power, etc etc. I've spent the last 5 years working hard to turn myself into a product development specialist. I've worked for a couple of startups, done several humanitarian engineering projects for the developing world, and now I've taken the plunge into a double masters program at Brigham Young University (MS in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA). My engineering studies are focused on improving the design process through effective communication of expectations between designers and stakeholders. I think that study is helping me be more effective as a leader, since communication of expectations is so critical in pretty much any team. My studies of business are opening up a whole new world to me, and I'm learning to speak a new language which will enable me to serve as bridge between designers and the businessmen that hire them. I realized that I really want to be in control of the development process. I don't want to optimize parts of a massive system over and over again, I want to be the guy talking to consumers, talking to marketing, talking to operations, and then reconciling all of that information into a life changing product. I'd say that some of my greatest strengths as a designer are keeping a teams focus on solving the root problem the customer has, having foresight and being thorough enough to see problems before they become problems, as well as an ability to really dig deep into the prior art in order to know the stat of the art and how to advance it. As a leader I think my strengths are centered around having compassion and really caring for the people I work with, being able to help teams laugh their way through setbacks, and again, helping teams constantly refocus on the root problems at hand.

Product ManagerWebbuy Jun 2021 - PresentBillings, Montana, United StatesLaunched countless product improvements, dozens of new features, several significant integrations with third party services, and a fully new version of our dealer control center. Analyzed qualitative and quantitative data from numerous sources to assess product performance, discover new opportunities, and root out the causes of bugs. This involved SQL, Python, Excel, VBA, Hotjar, Mode, and Heap among others. Created marketing materials and trained our customer facing teams as part of rolling out new products and tools for our clients. Benchmarked competing tools and gathered qualitative research from our many stakeholders to aid roadmapping prioritization decisions. Built out an analytic reporting system for all of our clients and stakeholders including automated weekly and monthly reports and a suite of dozens of on demand widgets. -
Associate Product ManagerWebbuy Jun 2020 - May 2021Billings, Montana, United StatesResearched and selected tools to set up efficient roadmapping with Jira integration as well as a complete customer feedback loop for data driven decision making.Engaged in discovery research on new features including mathematical modeling for back end calculations and user experience design for front end appearance.Performed comprehensive research and planning for a full suite of analytical tools being built out for a wide variety of stakeholders. -
Research AssistantByu Ira A. Fulton College Of Engineering Aug 2018 - Apr 2023Provo, UtahWorked with the capstone programs at the US Air Force Academy and Brigham Young University to try to improve the design process. We developed new ways to think about the design space using changes in technology and changes in user tactics, especially during the ideation portion of the design process. We've also worked on quantifying major blindspots that designers have with respect to their sponsor's expectations for project outcomes.Developed statistical methodologies for quantifying and analyzing the alignment of expectations between designers and their project stakeholders. Proposed tools the design community could use to improve expectations alignment. -
Research And Development EngineerHall Labs Feb 2016 - Aug 2018Provo, UtahHall Labs is a startup incubator that claims over $640M in exits and boasts over 600 patents and applications.I researched, tore apart, repurposed, and designed dozens of distinct electromechanical systems, and the breadth and depth of my understanding of hardware has grown tremendously. I worked doing research and development for two of their startups, Medic.Life and NeverDump. At Medic.Life they're developing smart toilets that perform medical analyses in order to collect long term data trends which they hope to correlate with the development of diseases, thus opening an entirely new world of preventative medicine. While there, I did exploratory research and development on innovative next-generation toilet designs that would enable the company to add fecal analysis to its urine analyzing systems. These piston driven toilets reduced water usage by 90% and were meant for use with anerobic digestion systems to create biofuel. I spearheaded numerous projects where I designed, modeled, prototyped, and tested numerous electromechanical systems. I used a unique prototyping system where we cut machining costs by doing mission critical parts in house, and express shipped simpler parts from Chinese machine shops (at 20% of the cost). NeverDump was sponsored by HallLogic, which specializes in creating new technologies for the towing industry (like the HallGauge). Anyone that has owned an RV knows that the sewage situation can be a nightmare, and our goal was to develop a solution that would completely eliminate the waste issue from the RV user experience. We tested all kinds of crazy ideas, and the company is now pushing a blackwater incinerator design (NeverDump) and still working on a greywater filtration system. -
Product Development EngineerWholives Sep 2017 - Jul 2018We redesigned the flagship product to half its weight and a sixth the packaged volume, which massively improved the product's transportability. Coupled with halving the product's cost, this allows the organization to reach a wider market segment of more remote and impoverished villages.

MachinistKc Manufacturing And Sales May 2015 - Feb 2016Pleasant Grove, UtahKC Manufacturing and Sales is a family run machine shop that does about $1M in annual sales, largely focusing on sheet metal fabrication. I learned about manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing under the foreman as I operated CNC turret presses, punch presses, press brakes, rollers, grainers, lathes, and a number of other finishing machines. We produced parts for all sorts of applications- medical devices, traffic monitoring systems, luxury furnishings, bbq grills, just about anything.
